Last month at AIA24, The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Committee on the Environment recognized the winners of this year’s AIA COTE Top Ten Awards. This week, we highlight the projects with a small taste of the text and images. Each one offers lessons about the value and benefits of holistic design and cross disciplinary collaboration. MASS MoCA Building 6 North Adams, MA This project, the third phase of the architect’s work at the MASS MoCA (Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art), bolsters the museum’s world-class reputation while also revitalizing a small New England mill town. The adaptive reuse of Building 6 and a smaller adjacent building has added more than 130,000 square feet of previously undeveloped space to the museum’s sprawling campus for contemporary art, multimedia exhibitions and accompanying events, workshops, and storage.? The project team remediated major contaminants on the site, once a brownfield, promoting the continued healing of the surrounding landscape and adjacent Hoosic River. The building’s transformation also leverages the museum’s location on a peninsula to offer panoramic views of the river and the Berkshire mountains beyond. At this art museum, connections to the outdoors become an important part of the visitor experience. NEWS: BXP Completes Waltham R&D Facility -- Boston Properties (BXP) recently completed a 113,000-rsf innovation hub in Waltham, Mass. Designed by TRIA, 103 CityPoint aims to reshape corporate culture for science and technology tenants, energizing its workforce and accelerating growth. The flexible flour-story structure provides 80 percent laboratory and office space, with 20 percent accommodating a double-height cGMP manufacturing area spanning approximately 25,000 sf. Column-free floor plates, 50-foot-clear structural spans, and 16-foot floor-to-floor heights can address a wide range of tenant requirements, complemented by an inviting lobby and café. Located in the Route 128 life sciences corridor, the biophilic development is illuminated by captivating exterior and interior lighting that was designed by Sladen Feinstein Integrated Lighting. The project team included Simpson Gumpertz & Heger (SGH) as structural engineer, VHB as civil engineer, Acentech as acoustic & audiovisual engineer, and R.W. Sullivan as telecom, data & security engineer. Arcadis provided MEP+FP engineering services and landscape design. Code Red Consultants acted as code consultant and enviENERGY Studio LLC performed energy modeling and LEED services. Additional consultants included VDA (vertical transportation), St. Onge Company (loading and logistics) and Colburn Guyette Foodservice Design. Distillery Campus Experience | Winners in Hospitality Lighting Design Kentucky’s oldest whiskey distiller, James B Beam Distilling Company, is the first amongst its counterparts to launch a visitor experience where guests can immerse themselves in bourbon tasting and a range of other activities dedicated to the craft. ?? The cohesive design across the 400-acre site draws inspiration from warm copper stills, bourbon colours, barrel-ageing rickhouses' charred wood, the original family homestead, and the Bluegrass country backdrop. Last night, Design Collective was honored to receive the Interface Student Housing award for “Best On Campus Architecture and Design” for its Student Housing and University Center at the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey. We have had a great team of collaborators and team members on this complex mixed-use project of 1,000 beds, built over a new student center facing the Manhattan skyline. The University of Chicago’s Woodlawn Residential and Dining Commons has been recently published in Architonic! The Woodlawn Residential and Dining Commons sits on a compact site at the southern edge of the campus abutting a historic neighborhood. Embracing the University of Chicago’s pedagogical House concept that promotes community and intellectual exchange within tightly knit cohorts of undergraduates, the Commons consists of three six-story and one fifteen-story residential wings set on a common single-story amenities level. On March 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, we'll celebrate with a proper Grand Opening of our Tewksbury location. The physical opening was such a whirlwind that we never paused to celebrate... so, we're going to do that now! This location is a gem of architecture, design, and thoughtfulness that we are proud to present to the community and surrounding area. Nothing great in this world happens without the help and support of many others.
