Partnerships like this one betweeen FinClusive and Metropolitan Capital are critical in their ability to enable financial innovation to flourish while managing compliance risk. It takes real commitment by leadership to prioritize and invest in a data driven approach that reaches all the way to the core while still leaving room for human observability and intervention. Since 1993 Regulators and Rulemakers have relied heavily on a singular technology to express their mandates to Financial Institutions. It’s called the Portable Document Format or PDF. And while it contains mostly clear policies, procedures, and guidelines of how to comply, this 30 year old technology lacks any executional follow through capability. As a result 359,640 human interpreters known as Compliance Officers in the U.S. make their best effort to follow the rules as prescribed. FINRA CAT has a 4% allowance rate for human error which means on just about every given day you have 14,385 well trained, well intentioned organizations “failing” their compliance obligations. This in turn creates a negative reinforcement loop of more manual oversight, and an ever increasing risk of fines, these two factors slow the underwriting and onboarding of anything that isn’t plain vanilla commercial banking. And while $150B of VC capital flows into Fintech each year ZERO flows into staffing engineers at the 11,652 US financial institutions. Thats what makes this partnership special. It’s truly a bootstrapped effort to make banking work better. Couple the lack of engineering resources with 10 year lockups on proprietary core banking software and you can begin to see that while over 100 countries support real time payments the U.S. has only Zelle, a consortium of just 7 banks. Zelle processed $806B last year and those 7 banks could absolutely be giving you your fair share of $44B in annual deposit yield which works out to about $28,800 lifetime per U.S. household. We’re fortunate to live in a capitalist society where innovators, entrepreneurs, and anyone with a paycheck has the final say on whether or not we as a society accept the status quo. If Big Tech has the ability to make a $30 foot long sandwich magically appear at the doorstep of millions of homes across America, Small Bank can absolutely deliver 5 digits back to every household in America.
