The images over the last few weeks from Hurricane Helene and the devastating impacts the storm has had on the communities of Western North Carolina, and the nearby states of Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia have demonstrated the critical need for communities to support each other in times of crisis. As members of the transportation community, we regularly rise to the occasion when crises occur to our people or to the infrastructure that we maintain so people can go about their daily lives. In this time of great need in these states, we ask that you rise to the occasion again and consider contributing to organizations helping in the recovery and rebuilding of communities in Western North Carolina and all of the states experiencing the devastating events of the last few weeks. ?? Situation Report ?? On October 9, Hurricane Milton struck Florida as a Category 3 storm, causing extensive damage. Tornadoes and flooding left over 3.3 million without power and at least nine dead, with 11 million at risk of further flooding. FEMA deployed over 1,000 management staff and 1,200 search and rescue personnel from other agencies. This hurricane follows Hurricane Helene, marking the shortest interval between major hurricanes in Florida’s history. CWS is actively engaging with local authorities and collaborating with fellow organizations. Stay Alert: Avoid Hurricane Relief Scams We All Want to Help – Here’s How to Do It Safely In the aftermath of hurricanes and major disasters, it's natural to want to help those affected. Unfortunately, scammers often take advantage of these moments to exploit our goodwill. Be cautious of fake charities or individuals posing as victims on social media. We recommend you only contribute to trusted organizations to ensure your donations go where they are truly needed. Should you receive an email asking for donations, don't click the links. Go to a search engine like Google and go to the website from there. Tuesday evening, about an hour before sunset, and we still remain in the calm before hurricane Milton comes ashore sometime late tomorrow on the West Coast of Florida. Now is not the time to become complacent, this storm can slow down or speed up, it can veer a little to the south or it could move to the north overnight. It’s only until we get into tomorrow that we will really have a good idea of exactly where the storm will make landfall. For those of us in Florida the time to provision is pretty much over, last minute storm preparation through the evening and into tomorrow morning is advised. 48 hours from now, some of us will have power and life will go on more or less normally while a significant number of our fellow Floridians are going to be struggling in blackout conditions, with no power and no air conditioning, in 90% humidity and 90° temperatures, food supplies thawing out and starting to go bad, water in the home, debris scattered around the yards and neighborhoods, a sense of loss and hopelessness as mother nature takes away our perceived control over our lives. This is when we as a community must come together to help those that are less fortunate than ourselves. I think it’s safe to say we can’t depend on our federal government/FEMA for immediate assistance and relief. We will need to depend upon our neighbors, upon our families, upon our communities to be self-sufficient and help those in need. Based in North Carolina, our hearts are heavy with the unprecedented destruction faced by our western counties due to Hurricane Helene. Despite the valiant efforts of first responders, the National Guard, utility teams, and relief personnel, many of the most severely affected areas are still isolated, struggling to access necessities like gas, food, water, electricity, and phone service. The impact has also been felt deeply in Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, and Florida where communities have suffered immense damage. Although our facilities were unharmed, it's certain that we all know someone—a colleague, friend, family member, neighbor or client—affected by this tragedy. Confronted with such overwhelming hardship and loss, deciding how best to offer support can be challenging. Yet by coming together in solidarity, we can create positive change. We encourage you to stand with Alcami in contributing to the North Carolina Disaster Relief Fund to assist our neighbors through their extensive recovery process.
