This week marks the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964—an important milestone in our nation's history. I was fascinated to learn that part of this landmark legislation was drafted at the Union for Reform Judaism's historic headquarters. From a young age, my family's history profoundly shaped our commitment to social justice. My great-grandparents fled antisemitism in Europe, and stories of my grandparents' involvement in the civil rights movement instilled in us a dedication to standing against hatred, bigotry, and discrimination in all its forms. On this Independence Day, I invite you to read reflections from URJ's Jonah Pesner, Maya Wiley, MARC MORIAL, John Echohawk, and other civil rights leaders about the progress made to date and the work which remains in order to realize the historic law’s full promise. Now a not-insignificant share of students nationwide attend a college where explicit means of doing so are against the law. Not to mention that race-conscious admissions, long one of selective higher ed’s favorite tools to diversify campuses, was struck down last year by the Supreme Court. ... Colleges are getting less and less deference from the public. How campus leaders continue to react to this trend will speak volumes about what — and whom — college is really for."

Last week’s Presidential Executive Order on #apprenticeships will essentially do three big things: (1) Identify the top occupations, especially hard-to-fill roles, that could be staffed through apprenticeships; (2) Develop new ways to upskill current federal employees and help them move into new roles via apprenticeship; and (3) Explore offering incentives to federal contractors and grantees who hire through apprenticeships. https://bit.ly/3Ix53DS
