Did you know that mental health and sleep are often linked? Sleep deprivation can contribute to adverse mental states and mental health disorders, and those who struggle with mental health disorders often struggle with #insomnia or other sleep disorders. Insufficient sleep is also linked to physical diseases including diabetes, heart disease and obesity. According to the CDC, adults need more than 7 hours of sleep per night, and adolescents need 8 to 10 hours of sleep per night — though about 1/3 of adults and more than 2/3 of adolescents in the U.S. reported getting less. As we #springforward out of #daylightsavingstime, take a moment to check out our tips for maintaining healthy sleep habits: ?? Avoid using electronics before bed ?? Create a bedtime routine of relaxing, electronic-free activities ?? Take a warm bath or shower before bed ? Try to go to sleep and wake up at around the same time every night ?? Use your bed only for sleep #awareness #sleep #sleepawareness #sleepawarenessweek #mentalhealth #mentalhealthmatters

On this day, we underscore the importance of teenage mental wellness. The cost of developing anxiety, depression and other mental health problems during this turbulent stage of life has significant and long-lasting effects that last well into adulthood. We encourage parents and schools to have open conversations with teens to learn and address the mental health challenges they face. Increased efforts to educate and destigmatize mental health issues and initiate prevention programs can alleviate the challenges our teens face on a daily basis and protect them from the ravages of mental illness in the future. #WorldTeenMentalWellness #selfcare. #seekhelp

Why do people engage in #selfharm? Many people who self-harm do so when they struggle to cope with difficult emotions. They often feel #overwhelmed and resort to physically injuring themselves in an effort to manage and control their mental distress. Common methods of self-harm include #cutting, #burning, and #bruising. While self-harm is not a mental health disorder, it is associated with anxiety, depression, eating disorders, substance abuse, post-traumatic stress disorder (#PTSD) and personality disorders. People who engage in self-harm often also have an underlying trauma or mental health condition. Only about 50% of people who engage in self-harm seek help, and most often turn to a friend rather than to a professional. For self-harm awareness month this March, we at CBC recognize the prevalence of this behavior and want you to help us spread awareness. If you have the urge to self-harm, have engaged in self-harm or know someone who has, please reach out to a trained professional to learn how to manage and regulate emotions using CBT and DBT skills. #selfcompassion #mentalhealth #mentalhealthmatters #awareness
