Today, on #RareDiseaseDay, we stand with the 300 million people worldwide living with a rare condition. Many rare diseases remain poorly understood, leaving patients and caregivers struggling to find reliable information and support. With our health learning platform, #Healthinote, we are dedicated to changing this by co-creating accessible digital resources with patient advocacy groups, clinicians, and experts. A great example is our work with the Cure & Action for Tay-Sachs (CATS) Foundation to develop the Toolkit for Tay-Sachs and Sandhoff disease, designed to provide clear, trusted information and practical support for families navigating these rare conditions. Beyond education, we also support rare disease clinical trials by creating engaging materials to improve awareness, recruitment, and retention. By empowering people, we can help advance research and improve outcomes. Together we can make a difference. ?? Health information isn’t just about education - it’s about #empowerment. Yet, only 1 in 10 people with long-term conditions are signposted to trusted health information by NHS services. This needs to change. New research from the Patient Information Forum (PIF), conducted with Cognitant Group Limited, Asthma + Lung UK, Anthony Nolan, CoppaFeel!, Macmillan Cancer Support, National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society (NRAS), Royal College of Anaesthetists, Scleroderma & Raynaud's UK and Tommy's, reveals the power of #trusted health information: ?? 8 in 10 say it helps them manage their health. ?? 9 in 10 seek information before medical appointments. ?? 8 in 10 feel confident discussing their treatment. ?? 9 in 10 prepare questions for their care team. ?? 1 in 2 people searched for health information in the last week; 1 in 3 in the last month. People actively seek trusted health information, but they want it to be signposted from healthcare professionals. ??Let’s work together to ensure every patient has access to the right information and support at the right time. Education is key to better health outcomes. Disease awareness programmes play a crucial role in empowering patients ?? by educating them about symptoms, risk factors, and effective management strategies, potentially leading to improved quality of life. In our latest blog, we explore the goals, benefits, and real-world impact of these programmes, and discuss how life sciences companies can utilise patient engagement to build trust and deliver better healthcare. One great example is the Kidney Essentials programme, which has empowered over 4,000 patients with information about chronic kidney disease (CKD), helping to improve outpatient care efficiency and reducing waiting times by 3 weeks. Another remarkable initiative is Advanced Melanoma Essentials by Bristol Myers Squibb UK & Ireland. This award-winning programme raised awareness about melanoma, offering comprehensive resources and emotional support to patients, resulting in increased knowledge. Shital Vekeria, Senior Disease Area Specialist for Oncology at BMS, shared, “At BMS, we believe that disease awareness programmes play a vital role in empowering patients and helping to improve outcomes.” ??
