Sijo and Anju have been valued members of the New Mexico State University community for many years. Anju earned her Master's degree in Computer Science, and Sijo works as a Research Scientist in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. After years of planning, their dream of becoming parents came true when Anju gave birth to twins on October 7, 2024. However, soon after, Anju faced serious health complications. She was transferred to a specialized medical facility in Denver, where a dedicated team worked tirelessly to care for her. Despite all efforts, Anju passed away on October 13. In addition to the emotional loss, Sijo and the family now face significant medical and repatriation costs to bring Anju back home to India. We ask for your support during this difficult time, as Sijo cares for their newborn twins and navigates the responsibilities of repatriation and honoring Anju’s memory.

Meet the Researcher ?? ? Nirmala Khandan: Pioneering Sustainable Water Solutions at New Mexico State University Since 1989, Nirmala Khandan has been a Distinguished Professor at New Mexico State University (NMSU), specializing in civil engineering with a focus on sustainable technologies for water and wastewater infrastructure. His research aims to ensure equitable access to sustainable, economic utility services. Khandan has collaborated with the New Mexico Water Resources Research Institute (NM WRRI) since 1992, leading impactful projects such as the evaluation of innovative groundwater treatment processes and the sustainable recovery of potable water from saline sources. He is currently supervising a project on crop fertilizer recovery from produced water, featured in the October 2023 NM WRRI eNewsletter. Khandan served as the principal investigator for NMSU in the National Science Foundation's Engineering Research Center for Re-inventing the Nation’s Urban Water Infrastructure (2010-2021). This decade-long project resulted in the hiring of new faculty, the graduation of nine PhD students (four now faculty), 75 published journal articles, and support for three faculty members. Throughout his career, Khandan has prioritized teaching, research, student support, and mentoring junior faculty. He has received numerous awards for his contributions, including the first John Clark Professorship and the first Ed & Harold Foreman Endowed Chair. Notably, he has been ranked among the “World’s Top 2% of Scientists” based on his extensive scholarly publications. Khandan holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Ceylon, Sri Lanka, and MS and PhD degrees in Environmental Engineering from Drexel University. His interest in water resources was sparked by his industry experience in Sri Lanka and has deepened during his tenure at NMSU. As he prepares for retirement after the Fall 2024 semester, Khandan advises graduate students to engage with the NM WRRI Student Water Research Grant Program to enhance their grant writing skills, secure funding, publish research, mentor undergraduates, and actively participate in conferences to build a professional network.

Meet the Researcher ?? Dr. Catherine Brewer Associate Professor, New Mexico State University We're thrilled to spotlight Catherine (Catie) Brewer, an Associate Professor in the Chemical and Materials Engineering Department at New Mexico State University (NMSU). Catie teaches courses on chemical engineering calculations, brewing science, and heat and mass transfer, while also directing NMSBrew (Brewery Engineering). As an affiliate faculty member of the Water Science Management NMSU graduate program, Catie actively collaborates with the New Mexico Water Resources Research Institute (NM WRRI). Her mentorship has led to the success of several master's and doctoral students who have explored innovative solutions in biomass energy and water treatment. Catie currently supervises four doctoral, five master’s, and about twelve undergraduate students. Notably, Hengameh Bayat secured an NM WRRI Student Water Research Grant for her project on wastewater treatment using byproducts from food waste liquefaction. This research aims to enhance the economic viability of hydrothermal liquefaction by harnessing nutrients and carbon from food waste. Catie's research centers on biomass utilization for energy and environmental remediation. Her team investigates alternative crops and agricultural residues to develop sustainable processes and products. A graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania (BS in Chemistry, 2007) and Iowa State University (PhD in Chemical Engineering, 2012), Catie has authored over forty peer-reviewed publications and is actively preparing more manuscripts. She is affiliated with professional organizations such as the AIChE - American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the Pink Boots Society. Catie has received several grants, including a recent award from the Department of Energy Sandia National Laboratory for her work on extracting rare earth elements. Looking ahead, Catie is excited about expanding research collaborations across multiple universities and enhancing educational initiatives related to alternative crops and agricultural engineering. She also aims to further develop NMSBrew as a vital resource for NMSU students and the New Mexico brewing industry!
