Committed to recording the end result for patients, determining best practices and optimizing shoulder surgery outcomes.
关于我们
The Codman Shoulder Society (CSS) is a group consisting of Dr. Warner and Dr. Higgins' former fellows that meets annually at the conclusion of the San Diego Shoulder Institute held in June. Our alumni group was given this name in honor of the father of the "End-Result" concept, Dr. Ernest Amory Codman. The CSS and its annual meeting are used to foster development of former fellows' careers and simultaneously provide evidence-based work to support shoulder care.

Dear Colleagues: ? I am pleased to share with you a link to the first ASES Webinar on Immersive VR. I am privileged to be the first VR Visiting Professor, and this webinar includes an overview presentation on the power of VR and a video of our live virtual surgery in the Metaverse.?I was joined by surgeons from around the USA in a virtual operating room so that we might share an arthroscopic shoulder surgery together. I am sure you’ll agree with me that this represents a major disruption of professional education, which will create enormous value in terms of easy access to immersive VR education on demand. Imagine a future where we have an App store for VR surgery for a huge number of Orthopedic procedures. All we would need to do is download the app and use our headset to practice whichever surgery we want to do in our virtual operating room. Now add the possibility of an expert joining and teaching you in the Metaverse without the need to travel in order to be in the same lab. ? Here is the link to the webinar from October 8th now available for public viewing on both YouTube?and the ASES website.?Feel free to check it out and share the links with anyone who could benefit. Please see recent post on how hospitals and health systems can better align the incentives of physicians to manage care costs by Derek Haas: (https://lnkd.in/eQPf-s6U) The article by Haas and Gallani is a clear and thoughtful recommendation as to the value of hospital-physician collaboration in order to create value. The relationship between physicians and their hospitals can be very complex. In some cases “Culture eats strategy for breakfast” (Peter Drucker). It was Al Capone, the gangster, who said “You’re either at the table or on the menu.” If we speak about surgeons, they are uniquely qualified to reduce costs as the surgical episode of care is easy to analyze and thus, it can be affected in a positive way. Some institutions can’t seem to get past the culture of employer vs employee in order to find their way to collaborate with surgeons so as to create value. For more insight into this conundrum of Hospital Physician Financial Relationship check out our recent webinar on the Codman Shoulder Society: Hospital-Physician Collaboration and Financial Alignment for Cost Management (attached below). Dear Colleagues: ? I’d like to share with you a book which considers a topic that affects all of us. Whether you are a capitalist or a socialist, you each have your own idea of what money brings. In the short book by Morgan Housel, “The Psychology of Money," context is given to us all. After all, we all have things we need, or we want, and we all have families to provide for. If you find this post of interest, you’ll have to read the book for the really interesting parts. ? Kind Regards, ? Jon “JP” Warner MD Founder, CSS

Dear Colleagues: I’d like to share with you a short video by Dr. Eric Bricker posted on LinkedIn. This considers the above topic, and it is very relevant to all of us as it raises some real important questions. Dr. Bricker considers behavior in the context of culture and incentives. We should all ask ourselves about our own incentives and values. E.A. Codman would be happy that these questions are being asked; however, Dr. Bricker doesn’t really go deep enough into the root cause and solution of bad culture and incentives. As Codman’s purpose and strategy was to measure outcomes more than 100 years ago, I wanted to place Dr. Bricker’s talk in context. Please watch the video (see the link below) and I offer a few additional comments as well, so read these after you watch the video. https://lnkd.in/e_AUMV-x Kind Regards, Jon “JP” Warner MD Founder, CSS?

Dear Colleagues: ? I recently posted on “Trust” in the healthcare delivery system. Enclosed is a short report from Becker’s that you may have missed. It stresses the problematic situation for your hospital system when it comes to insurance companies’ approvals for care. We should remember that we all are in it together in terms of the frustration with the insurance companies’ efforts to delay/deny care. Kind Regards, ? Jon “JP” Warner MD Founder, CSS
