???? Happy International Women’s Day!! Today we celebrate the achievements of all women in the past, present, and future. We invite you to join us in celebrating this year’s theme of #AccelerateAction!! Code With Her’s mission has always been to close the gender gap in technology. We teach our students real life experiences through our workshops so they can take action for the betterment of their futures! We want to teach them that it is important to stand up for what you believe in, but also to put those beliefs into action! If they are given opportunities, they should take that momentum and passion to find strategies, explore resources, and support other likeminded allies! So join us in accelerating the action of supporting and elevating the women in your lives towards a bigger, better, and equal future! To learn more about our mission and purpose, feel free to follow us or check out our page: codewithher.org “If your actions create a legacy that inspires others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, then, you are an excellent leader.” - Dolly Parton - - ??? #accelerateaction #internationalwomensday #celebratewomeneveryday #womenintech #girlsintech #coding #codewithher #womeninstem #womenempowerment #womenempoweringwomen #iwd2025#betterfuture

?? Happy Fall everyone! Hope your summer was splendid and October is starting well! ???? Over the summer, CWH had our very first Volunteer Fellowship! We had two teams; who focused on researching IDEs for our lanterns and our Coding for Cookies curriculum! The students who signed up for the fellowship spent 8 weeks learning, developing, and learning more about their talents, strengths, and goals! Some disassembled our C4C curriculum and created their own spin on it! Some dove in head first to learn more about IDEs (Integrated Development Environments) and how to utilize these to better our codes and curriculum! ????? Beyond coding, they also learned how to work together as a team and attended some professional development workshops. They also learned public speaking skills by practicing their presentations and being more comfortable with presenting their brilliant ideas. Everyone who attended the presentation day was absolutely inspired and amazed by what our fellows did in just 8 weeks! ?????????? CWH is so excited to have been able to provide this fellowship to our students! We hope to continue this program and provide a space where our fellows can learn, create, and thrive amongst one another to become our future in tech! #codewithher #codewithus #codingforkids #codingcommunity #technology #girlsintech #womenintech #womeninstem #womenintech #community #leadership #possibility #impact #skillbuilding #inclusiveness #computerscience #computerengineering #codinglife

We had such an amazing range of ages join us! One of our participants was able to complete the workshop with the help of the wonderful translator. Truly embodying our spirit that nothing should stop you from learning new skills! ?? Special thank you to the Otay Mesa-Nestor & San Ysidro Branch Libraries for hosting and collaborating with us! The youth program coordinator even joined us by programming his own lantern! It was truly a team effort and made the whole experience all the more special! ???? ?????? We loved learning more about the Mexican Heritage and the history of the papel picado! Such an amazing story of celebration! ?? Pride Month Spotlight!! ?? ??????Today we would like to highlight Ruth Gates (1962-2018), who was a pioneer in saving coral reefs! ?? Gates was the first female president of the International Society for Reef Studies. She was also the director of the Hawai’i Institute of Marine Biology where she established the Gates Coral Lab. Her team continued conducting research centered around coral reef ecosystems even after her passing. ???? Her research was dedicated to understanding coral reef systems and educating the public about the threat climate change places on marine life. Gates was working on breeding “super corals,” reefs, that could withstand the high sea temperatures. ??? Gates’ life mission was to help save coral reefs and the tactics she pioneered continue being implemented to save coral reefs worldwide. ?? Other facts! Ruth Gates was openly gay & married her wife in 2018. Sadly, she was shortly after diagnosed with brain cancer and died during surgery due to complications. Her work is featured in the Netflix documentary, Chasing Coral, and she continues being renowned for her brilliance and infectiously bright personality. #codewithher #pridemonth2024?? #codewithus #codingforkids #codingcommunity #technology #girlsintech #womenintech #womeninstem #womenintech #community #leadership #possibility #impact #skillbuilding #inclusiveness #computerscience #computerengineering #codinglife #savetheplanet #coralreef #ruthgates

?? Pride Month Spotlight!! ?? ???????? Today we would like to highlight Sally Ride (1951-2012), who was the first American woman in space! ??????? Sally studied at Stanford University. She had a Bachelors of Science degree in Physics, Bachelor of Arts in English Literature, Masters & PhD in Physics. ???????? In 1978, she joined the first class of NASA astronauts to include women, NASA Astronaut Group 8. She helped develop the Space Shuttle’s robotic arm. In 1983, she was the first American woman (and youngest at 32) to fly into space on the Space Shuttle Challenger. ?? Sally is regarded as a pioneer in her field and won many awards such as the NASA Space Flight Medal, NCAA’s Theodore Roosevelt Award, etc. She was also inducted into the Austroaut Hall of Fame and the National Women’s Hall of Fame. She became the director of the California Space Institute at UCSD, and started her own non-profit company, Sally Ride Science. This aimed to inspire students to pursue their interests in mathematics and science. She founded this company with her partner, Tam O’Shaughnessy. It was later revealed, in her obituary, that O’Shaughnessy was also her long time partner of 27 years. She became the first known LGBT astronaut. ???? Fun facts! Sally Ride was one of the first women to be commemorated with a new series of quarters from the U.S. Mint in 2021. In 2019, a Barbie doll with her features was released by Mattel. There is a limited series that will be released soon called The Challenger, starring Kristen Stewart as Sally Ride. #codewithher #pridemonth2024?? #codewithus #codingforkids #codingcommunity #technology #girlsintech #womenintech #womeninstem #womenintech #community #leadership #possibility #impact #skillbuilding #inclusiveness #computerscience #computerengineering #codinglife

?? Pride Month Spotlight!! ?? For the month of June, we’d like to highlight some scientists of the LGBTQ+ community that made incredible impacts in STEM and society! ????♂??? Today we would like to highlight Alan Turing (1912-1954), best known for being the Computer Guy! ?? Alan was a mathematician who studied at Cambridge & Princeton Universities. He mainly focused on learning the comparison between computation and the human brain. This will later lead to the “Artificial Intelligence” that we’re aware of today. ???? During World War II, he played a key role in helping decipher the German messages to their allies. He, along with code-breaker Gordon Welchman, created a machine called the Bombe that helped them decipher the Enigma codes. “Enigma” was a type of enciphering machine the Germans used to send secure messages. He also led the ‘Hut 8’ team with decrypting complex German naval communications. ?? His legacy left an incredible impact on computer science; being credited as the father of theoretical computer science. Since 1966, the highest achievement and award (handed out annually) that one can receive in the computer science industry is called the “Turing Award.” ???? Fun facts! Alan Turing currently appears on the Bank of England £50 note, which was released on June 23, 2021! The movie, The Imitation Game, was based on Alan’s biography! #codewithher #pridemonth2024?? #codewithus #codingforkids #codingcommunity #technology #girlsintech #womenintech #womeninstem #womenintech #community #leadership #possibility #impact #skillbuilding #inclusiveness #computerscience #computerengineering #codinglife
