It was an honor to join in conversation on MainStage and speak to awesome group of technologists about creating a new digital age for all at the AnitaB.org Grace Hopper Conference! The 20k+ people, the incredible talent and passion in the room for civic tech, and the energy to create new digital age for all gives me hope for our future. We, Code for America, had a few sessions we led, and we made lots of connections. I am already looking forward to next year’s conference!

Filing taxes can be stressful. When we piloted our state tax e-filing tool, FileYourStateTaxes, we focused on ways to make clients feel confident and safe throughout the process. For caseworkers and government agencies, churn can be a major financial and logistical issue, increasing workloads for caseworkers, document processing centers, and customer call centers. In 2018, we partnered with Louisiana’s Department of Children and Family Services, Department of Health, Office of Technology Services, and the Governor’s Office to create a one-way text messaging service that broadcasts reminders and guidance to clients at key points throughout the benefits enrollment and renewal process. We sent more than 50 million text message reminders to benefit-eligible Louisianans, integrating four benefits programs into one texting service. Through this work, we saw a 37% increase in renewals for SNAP clients, and a 67% increase in renewals for Medicaid clients. Read our Success Story to learn more. https://lnkd.in/egFjn9jm

We’re expanding our FileYourStateTaxes partnerships to bring a state income tax solution to two more states for 2025. We’re excited to announce our work with the State of New Jersey and the Idaho State Tax Commission to provide their residents access to free, easy, online federal and state tax filing through our tool, which complements the IRS’s Direct File. “Today’s announcements show that Direct File has the wind at its back,” said Amanda Renteria, CEO of Code for America. “Direct File’s functionality continues to grow in leaps and bounds, and states across the country are joining the effort to revolutionize and democratize access to the tax system.
