Thanks to Sustainability Magazine for the mention -- My experience and collaboration with New York City Economic Development Corporation's Fellowship Program brought our work deeper into sustainable cities. In February, our team attended COMTO New York's Black History Month event! One powerful takeaway from COMTO’s African Americans and Labor in Transportation event was Chris Silvera’s reminder that Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion isn’t about giving handouts—it’s about recognizing talent that has always been here. The term “DEI hire” is often twisted to imply inferiority, when in reality, it represents long-overdue access to leadership. Being in the room for this conversation was a reminder of how important it is to push back against misconceptions and advocate for real change. Hearing leaders challenge the narrative and demand better representation in transportation leadership reinforced why these discussions matter—not just during Black History Month, but every day. A huge thank you to @Chris Silvera, @Anita Miller, @Kim Moore-Ward, and @Demetrius Crichlow for their powerful insights, and to COMTO New York for creating the space to have these necessary conversations. #BlackHistoryMonth #LeadershipInTransit #COMTO

?? February 23rd was W.E.B. Du Bois birthday. ?? When we think of W.E.B. Du Bois, we tend to remember his groundbreaking sociological work and activism for racial justice. However, his contributions to data visualization remain one of his most influential yet underappreciated achievements. Through bold, hand-drawn visualizations, Du Bois used data to challenge racial stereotypes, advocate for Black progress, and present an undeniable case for equality— talk about groundbreaking! ?? According to an article published by USAfacts.org, In 1900, Du Bois and a team of his students at Atlanta University created a series of data visualizations for the Exposition Universelle in Paris. These visualizations—over 60 in total—illustrated the economic, social, and political status of Black Americans just 35 years after the abolition of slavery. The charts, diagrams, and maps told a compelling story. ?? What set Du Bois apart was his ability to transform raw numbers into vivid, persuasive storytelling. His use of bold colors, clean geometric lines, and innovative designs made complex sociological data accessible and engaging. In a time when statistical data was often manipulated to justify racism, Du Bois’ visualizations reclaimed data as a tool for truth and empowerment. ? Today, his work continues to influence data storytelling, inspiring scholars, designers, and activists to use visualization as a means of advocacy and information spreading. Modern data practitioners recognize his charts as a predecessor to contemporary data journalism and social justice analytics. His ability to merge data with art and activism reminds us that numbers, when presented thoughtfully, have the power to shape public perception, make data more palatable and drive social change. ???
