The Cobalt Institute (CI) is a non-profit trade association composed of producers, users, recyclers, and traders of cobalt which promotes the sustainable production and use of cobalt and acts as a knowledge centre for governments, agencies, industry, the media and the public. The Institute is largely focused on health, safety and environment, regulatory matters (chemical management), responsible sourcing, sustainability markers, global advocacy and providing useful information on cobalt and its applications.

Cobalt Institute participated in the?2025 Annual Plenary of the Voluntary Principles Initiative (VPI)?in London last week, marking the 25th?anniversary of the creation of the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights! This milestone is especially significant as we took part in the plenary in our?new role as an Observer?to the VPI. ? Our team, represented by Susannah McLaren?and Alec Popper, engaged in important conversations with the corporate, government and NGO pillars on key issues surrounding?human rights,?security,?conflict, ASM, grievance mechanisms?and?access to remedy?within the extractives sector. We were also delighted to join the In-Country Working Group meeting of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC),?and to catch up with our member Glencore and partners Human Level and Steptoe LLP. ? The VPI is a vital multi-stakeholder initiative dedicated to sharing best practices and mutually supporting the implementation of the VPs. We are honoured to be a part of this important initiative and to support and amplify this important work. ?
