Mission & History Our mission is to better sustain, coordinate, and improve local planning, development, and community services that address the needs of low-income and working-class residents and small businesses of South Los Angeles. Our work is rooted in a philosophy of coalition-building and collaboration with residents and other stakeholders to jointly create a lasting impact in the community. We focus on three program areas in conjunction with the development of affordable and permanent supportive housing: - Workforce for Adults and Youth - Housing and Support Services - Entrepreneur and Small Business Services Founded in January 2005 by neighborhood residents and community leaders, our goal is to strengthen the economic vitality of South Los Angeles and improve the quality of life for youth and the community. CRCD received its federal tax-exempt status as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation in December 2005. Fiscal sponsorship and operational support were generously provided by the Los Angeles Conservation Corps through July 2006. Today, CRCD is committed to our mission and moving forward with a dedicated board of directors, advisory board, and staff. CRCD is funded by a combination of grants, earned income, and generous donations.

  • For the past four years, Gabriela Ponce has been a dedicated part of the CRCD team, proving that hard work, leadership, and resilience know no limits. ? She started in our Graffiti Department, where she was the only woman driver for two years. From there, she transitioned into the Maintenance Department before stepping into her current role as a Crew Lead in the Beautification Department—the only woman crew lead on her team. ? Every day, Gabriela and her crew work in District 15, in Watts, removing trash, debris, and bulky items, and handling weed abatement to keep the community clean and beautiful. Her leadership has earned the admiration of her crew, the respect of her colleagues, and appreciation from the City Council office. ? Beyond her work, Gabriela is a single mother of six who has spent most of her adult life balancing two jobs to provide for her family. With a warm heart and a strong work ethic, she is always ready to help those in need, setting an example of dedication and perseverance. ? Gabriela, we see you, we celebrate you, and we appreciate you. Thank you for all you do for CRCD and the Watts community!

  • At CRCD, we believe in not only uplifting our community but also investing in the development of our own staff. This Women’s History Month, we’re proud to celebrate Veronica Vitela, our new Director of Economic Development, who is dedicated to empowering others through financial education and economic opportunity. “Over 15 years ago, I took a leap into the nonprofit sector, driven by a passion for serving my community and empowering others through financial education. Looking back, I am proud of the impact I’ve made, the experiences I’ve gained, and how they have shaped my journey to my current role. My work has focused on financial literacy, small business development, and economic empowerment, helping individuals and entrepreneurs build financial stability and long-term success. ? As I move forward, my mission remains to motivate and uplift more women, equipping them with the knowledge and confidence to take control of their futures. ?I hope to inspire the next generation of women leaders and show them that hard work and believing in yourself leads you to great experiences.” Her leadership and dedication reflect CRCD’s mission to foster opportunity, not just for those we serve, but for the staff who make our work possible. We are excited to see how she continues to motivate, uplift, and inspire the next generation of women leaders. Join us this month as we celebrate the women shaping our programs, our organization, and our community.

  • March is Women’s History Month, and we’re taking this time to recognize the incredible women who are part of the CRCD ecosystem. From the participants in our programs to the dedicated staff and partners who support them, women are making a lasting impact in South Los Angeles and beyond. Their hard work, perseverance, and success inspire us every day. Throughout this month, we’ll be sharing their stories—highlighting the challenges they’ve overcome, the opportunities they’ve created, and the paths they’ve paved for others. We’re grateful to walk alongside them and look forward to celebrating their achievements. Stay tuned!
