As we commemorate International Day of Education 2025, "to deliver on our collective promise of a just and vibrant future for every child and their families, we need schools that not only focus on measurable learning outcomes such as numeracy and literacy – crucial as they are – but also on children’s experience of school." A coalition of and for Global South practitioners working to prevent violence against children in school.
关于我们
We are a coalition of and for the Global South. We synthesize knowledge, convene practitioners, and advocate to prevent violence against children in schools. Our aim is to contribute to creating a positive school experience for all stakeholders by sharing ideas, interventions, knowledge and support across Latin America, Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa. We have established three regional hubs to drive collaboration and action. Because when we elevate and amplify voices of practitioners in the Global South, we will arrive at solutions that are the most sustainable, regionally relevant, and work better for all.

"A world free of gender-based violence and discrimination is possible, especially when we engage young people as leaders of communities who are motivated to shift harmful gender norms."
How can we create a world free of violence? For Pritha Chatterjee, the answer lies in empowering young people and transforming social norms.? ? As part of Breakthrough Trust, Pritha works with adolescents to address violence and discrimination early, starting with families and schools. Through a gender-transformative education system, Breakthrough advocates for equal opportunities, safe environments, and shifting norms that perpetuate inequality.? ? Pritha’s message is clear: feminist organizations and civil society are vital in advancing gender equality, but they need more support and funding.? ? Together, we can fulfill the vision of the Beijing Platform for Action and create a world where all women and girls thrive.? ? Read more: https://lnkd.in/dNeBiUw2? ? #ForAllWomenAndGirls #Beijing30?

The evidence behind school-based interventions to address violence is quickly evolving, with more high-quality reviews and promising approaches coming from the Global South: "In LMICs, life-skills/school-based curriculum approaches have been recategorised to ‘promising’ in their ability to reduce VAWG in LMICs.?A large portion of reviews in this category (20 of 36) were assessed to be of high or moderate quality, and most of the reviews from LMICs (11 of 17) were also of high or moderate quality." As the secretariat of the Asia Hub of the Coalition for Good Schools we call for increased investments in preventing violence against children in and through schools. We believe that for achieving better learning outcomes it is important to have #SaferSchools where children #DoNotFear. We need investments to strengthen support interventions with intersectional lens embedding gender and other identities in programme and curriculum, promote capacity strengthening of various stakeholders and contribute to conversations on building safeguarding mechanisms and tools in the education system. Commemorating International day of Education Time to Deliver on the Promise: Why the Experience of School Matters The global push to make schooling accessible to millions of children has been a remarkable success. Even in some of the world’s poorest countries, coordinated policy efforts have carved out the necessary budgets to enrol children in schools. Parents, too, have made significant sacrifices—foregoing income and labour contributions from their children—in the hope that education will be their family’s path out of poverty. This collective promise to humanity has raised aspirations worldwide, and it is a milestone worth celebrating. However, those of us working in education have long anticipated the bigger question that follows this achievement: What will children find once they arrive at school? The reality, in schools across the Global South, has been far less encouraging. Despite increased enrolment, large numbers of children are leaving school without having learned effectively. For many families, patience is wearing thin. The Crisis of Quality in Education In response, stakeholders in education have turned their focus to improving quality. #Investments have been made in reducing classroom sizes, improving teacher-to-student ratios, enhancing curricula, and upgrading teaching methods. These are critical interventions—but they miss a key piece of the puzzle. When we ask children about their experiences at school, a common theme emerges across different contexts. Many children feel that schools are places where they are contained rather than nurtured. Their creativity is stifled, their voices are ignored, and their experiences are dominated by rote learning under constant threat of punishment. Instead of fostering curiosity and empowerment, schools often prioritise compliant behaviour and test performance. For too many children, the experience of schooling feels dehumanising, bordering on violence against them. The Call for Change On the International Day of Education, we as part of the Coalition for Good Schools are calling for urgent investment to #prevent #ViolenceAgainstChildren in and through #schools. To truly deliver on the promise of #education as a pathway to a just and vibrant future, we must reimagine schools. It is not enough to focus solely on measurable learning outcomes like literacy and numeracy—important as they are. Schools must also prioritise curating school environments that are safe, dignified, and nurturing. Schools should inspire children, give them opportunities for self-expression, and foster a belief in larger possibilities. They must be spaces where imagination, creativity, and agency thrive. As we reflect on our collective aspirations for education, let us commit to schools that respect and empower children—schools that fulfil not only the promise of learning but also the promise of humanity.
