Ego hurts performance, culture, and engagement—but it’s not just about the power-hungry boss. We often think of ego as puffing up—like the boss who power-trips or pushes unrealistic deadlines to assert dominance. But ego also shows up when we shrink back—people-pleasing, avoiding conflict, or not sharing ideas. Both behaviors limit creativity, trust, and impact. So, what can we do? Notice your ego: Do you puff up or shrink back? What triggers it? Notice others' ego: When egos clash, nobody wins. Choose curiosity, rather than reactivity. Ego is about self-protection. It comes up when we feel afraid (even when we don't actually feel it - our ego comes up to keep us FROM feeling the fear.) The opposite of ego isn’t submission—it’s choosing with conscious intention how you want to respond. That doesn't mean get walked all over, it could mean: setting a boundary, being direct, or?calmly asking for clarity instead of reacting emotionally. By becoming aware of our patterns, we can show up in ways that serve both us and those around us. The more we understand it, the more we can lead with intention instead of letting ego run the show.
