A big thank you to the University of Michigan for featuring our free summer writing and photography programs for Detroit high school students! Read all about how two U of M alumni, Stephanie Steinberg and Sacred Overstreet-Amos, partnered to coach students interested in photography careers. "The whole goal is to give them a trade, not just photography as an art, but more like a trade where they’re learning something that they could possibly feed their families on in the future,” Overstreet-Amos said. Tickets are going fast for our Summer Author Series event with Bridgett M. Davis and Felicia B. George this Wednesday at 7 p.m. at The Whitney! This unique author event will delve into the Detroit numbers — the illegal gambling system that served as the precursor to the Michigan lottery we know today. As Felicia’s book published by Wayne State University Press explains, “Illegal lottery operators and their families and employees were often exposed to precarity and other adverse conditions, and they profited from their neighbors’ hope to make it through another day. Despite scandal and exploitation, these operators and their families also became important members of the community, providing steady employment and financial support for local businesses.” Get your tickets before they sell out!
