Great to see this recap of the recent visit to Teesside by the Greenhouse Gas Removal Future Leaders Network from Network member Dr Dan Evans!
Just returned from an extremely inspiring #NetZero trip to Teesside with the Greenhouse Gas Removal Future Leaders Network - once again, a genuine pleasure to be in the company of such knowledgeable and passionate thought leaders from across climate #research #industry and #policy. ?? A visit to SUEZ UK to see their energy-from-waste facility, where carbon from flue gas emissions is transported to, and stored within, an aquifer 145 km off the coast beneath the North Sea. ?? A stroll at RSPB Saltholme Nature Reserve: once an industrial site, now one of the UK’s largest inland breeding colonies of Common Tern. ?? A presentation from Tees Valley Combined Authority on their ambition to become the world's first Net Zero industrial cluster by 2040. ?? A tour around Teesworks, Europe’s largest brownfield site. ?? A research showcase from Net Zero Industry Innovation Centre. Thanks, as ever, to the CO?RE - The Greenhouse Gas Removal Hub. Much to take back to Cranfield University!

Don't miss this new piece on illuminem from Sophie Gill, Ph.D. of Isometric. Sophie is a member of the Greenhouse Gas Removal Future Leaders Network and an expert on marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR).
Scientific rigor ensures that every Isometric carbon removal credit represents a tonne of carbon dioxide durably removed from the atmosphere. In a new illuminem article for the Greenhouse Gas Removal Future Leaders Network, Isometric Head of Marine Science Sophie Gill, Ph.D. breaks down why robust monitoring, verification and reporting (MRV) is essential to scaling marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR). For insights into how mCDR technologies are evolving, follow the first link in the comments.

For your weekend reading: what are nature-based solutions and how can they play a role in responsible greenhouse gas removal (GGR)? Can we count any form of GGR that involves a biological process as a nature-based solution, or do we need stricter criteria? Dr John Lynch, who worked as a CO2RE researcher until the end of last year, reflects on these questions and more in a new Q&A for our website: https://lnkd.in/ebJAxHWj Oxford Martin School The Agile Initiative Nature-Based Solutions Initiative Department of Biology, University of Oxford

Last year, CO2RE opened its third Pathfinders funding call to find projects with the potential to safely remove and store greenhouse gases for at least 1,000 years. Today we're delighted to announce the winners of this call. We're funding five new, innovative projects that are looking at a range of different greenhouse gas removal (GGR) and storage methods: ?? Seagrass Enhanced WeatherING (SEWING), led by Dr Feifei Deng of the National Oceanography Centre. ?? Calcium oxide and lysine functionalised hydrochar (CaLyChar), led by Dr Humbul Suleman at Teesside University. ?? Afforestation, BECCS and Biochar Synergy (ABBS), led by Prof Ondrej Masek of the UK Biochar Research Centre (UKBRC) at The University of Edinburgh. ?? Proof of concept for combining mechanochemically processed rock waste to mineralize CO2?from Direct Air Capture (DAC), led by Dr Mark Stillings at the University of Strathclyde. ?? Demonstration of predictive modelling for increased durability of biochar carbon removal, led by Dr Saran Sohi at The University of Edinburgh. Each project has been awarded up to £75,000. “We’re [the UK] a thought leader when it comes to carbon removal. But we’re at significant risk of not being the leader of the pack [on deployment]." Dr Rob Bellamy, who leads CO2RE's work on responsible innovation and societal engagement, recently spoke to Adam Vaughan at The Times about carbon removal technologies in the UK. The UK is a leader in the scientific development of these technologies, but there are challenges when it comes to how to reward people for storing CO2. Following our site visit to the Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW) trials on lowland pasture last November, last week we were delighted to visit ERW trials taking place on arable land at Rothamsted Research in Harpenden with a group of stakeholders from the research, farming, policy, business and investment fields. The trials are part of?the UKRI BBSRC Enhanced Rock Weathering Demonstrator?programme. ? ? We heard from the ERW Demonstrator about the emerging findings from a whole range of field measurements, including on crop yields, soil pore water and soil structure, and biodiversity, and how certain measurements are informing geochemical analyses to determine weathering rates and carbon dioxide sequestration. We also learned about community workshops that have formed an integral part of the programme, taking place near field sites and at locations to explore local issues and perceptions.? Thank you to our hosts at Rothamsted Research, Professor Steve McGrath FRS and Dr Ian Shield, and to our ERW Demonstrator colleagues Dr Christopher Pearce and Professor Nick Pidgeon for taking us to see the field site (during a welcome period of sunshine on an otherwise rainy day!) and answering all our questions. Last week the UK's Climate Change Committee (CCC) published its Seventh Carbon Budget. The CCC advises the government on how to meet its net zero targets. Part of this is publishing carbon budgets, which provide advice to the government on a cap on greenhouse gas emissions over a five-year period, taking into account various economic, technological, sociological and environmental factors. We are currently in the Fourth Carbon Budget period. The Seventh Carbon Budget covers the period 2038 to 2042. So what does the Budget mean for how greenhouse gas removals can help the UK meet its net zero targets? Dr Steve Smith, Executive Director of CO2RE, breaks it down in a new analysis for the CO2RE website: https://lnkd.in/eBJd-6M6 For a quick summary, check out our reaction to the Budget here: https://lnkd.in/eg5Mce5n Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment - University of Oxford Undaunted: Tackling climate change with innovation Grantham Institute - Climate Change and the Environment UK Research and Innovation Sustainable Views Carbon Brief Oxford Policy Engagement Network (OPEN) Philippa Nuttall

Fantastic coverage of a new paper from LEEP Institute team members Frankie Cho and Professor Brett Day which shows that 'a ‘portfolio’ approach to tree planting – diversifying species and planting locations – helps balances risks and moves beyond planting strategies that simply hope that everything will be ok.' ADD-TREES Project LEEP Institute NZ+ co-lead Brett Day: “We don’t have any other option that can remove carbon from the atmosphere at the scale and cost that we need to meet our Net Zero targets. While tree-planting carries risks, our study shows that, if done strategically, it remains the best solution we have.” https://lnkd.in/e3PdhJc9
