ICYMI, CO2EFFICIENT’s new coalition, the Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure Coalition (AIC), responded to the National Science Foundation’s Request for Information on the Development of an AI Action Plan. The AIC’s response highlights the urgent need for grid modernization, scalable data centers, research and development, and public-private partnerships to sustain U.S. leadership in AI. Key Recommendations for the AI Action Plan Include: ? Accelerate Grid Modernization and Resilience- Enhance grid efficiency, reliability, and resilience to support AI-driven demand growth. ? Optimize Energy Distribution and Incentivize Smart Demand Growth- Encourage co-location of AI data centers with power plants, align wholesale tariffs with cost-benefit principles, and reform electricity market designs to optimize grid capacity. ? Encourage Innovation and Demand-Side Solutions- Promote new tariff structures, leverage demand flexibility, and eliminate barriers to optimize existing transmission infrastructure and unlock market-driven solutions. ? Drive Research & Innovation – Collaborate with the Department of Energy’s National Laboratories to fund R&D on efficient AI models, advanced cooling, and next-gen energy solutions. ? Foster Public-Private Collaboration – Establish a federal AI “policy home” and a dedicated working group to align industry and government efforts. ? Create AI Development Zones – Establish designated regions that could support future data center development with fast-tracked approvals, reliable power access, and economic incentives. The U.S. must act now to modernize its energy and digital infrastructure to unlock AI’s full potential. A strategic, forward-thinking approach will drive economic growth, strengthen national security, and cement America’s leadership in the AI-powered future.
