Annie Liao ????, one of the incredible founders we work for, reflected on her first three months going all-in on Build Club. To quote her post (https://lnkd.in/gzGGihgr): "Taking some steps back to reflect, some of my biggest learnings so far: ?? Environment really matters - since relocating to SF we have closed five new partnerships through being in the right place e.g. we worked with Rahul from Julius AI from the same coworking space. Getting the team right is an iterative process - the team is the second product of the startup. Learning that this will take iteration and isn’t something we will get right on the first try was an exciting surprise. Clarity on direction is the most valuable thing to provide as a founder - having clear metrics and goals to sprint towards is invaluable for team morale. Rejection is standard - whether in sales calls, hiring, partnerships, etc, it’s continuous. It’s all about mindset, fuel to the fire, and not taking it personally. There will always be things out of contr.ol It’s been an insane journey." Laura Nicol sat down with her for a Calling Operator episode to hear what's next for her and the team—and Build Club 2.0 ???

This stealth team is creating a game-changer for product orgs, with a shipping pace for new updates and features that’s unmatched. They're ??. It’s a chance to build alongside a founding engineering team from Amazon, Canva, and Dropbox. If you're in my network and looking for your next early-stage and founding engineer opportunity, I’d happily facilitate an intro to Nathan.
The team has been busy! With early pilot customers loving what they are seeing we are looking to bring on another Founding Software Engineer. We are still a lean team of 9 people and keen to bring in fresh perspectives and passion! We expect the senior/staff level experience role to have their minds and hearts deep into browser technologies, large scale data ingestion and querying, graph networks and cloud infrastructure. Think backend with some DevOps but you understand the DOM and its nuances, like building APIs and wearing many hats. We are a full Typescript shop - with infra on AWS and data on S3, Clickhouse and Postgres - you won’t be tied to the backend though! If you're the kind of person who sees complex problems and thinks "challenge accepted," we should talk. This is a chance to build a product from the ground up alongside a team with a high bar for quality and eye for detail. The majority of the team is in sunny Sydney with an office space in Surry Hills, but we support remote work (I myself live in Byron Bay). Reach out if your interested or would like to learn more!

Wonderful to get a peek behind the curtain on all things post-sales at Flagship. Props to Laura Nicol for bringing this one to life!
?? New episode drop! Laura Nicol chats with ?? Deena Metz, Head of Customer Success at Flagship. For Deena, being at the nexus of a company is where she thrives, so she’s placed herself at the heart of an early-stage startup: customer success. She’s one of 12 employees, building alongside Simon Molnar to establish Flagship as the backbone of retail operations in Australia, the US, and beyond. In today’s episode, we discuss: ?? Deena’s childhood dream of playing soccer for the Matildas ?? How an internship in New York launched her career in digital health at ANDHealth and Perx Health ?? Joining Flagship as the first female on the team and her approach to building the company's post-sales function and customer experience ?? Partnering with retail brands to raise the bar in visual merchandising and bring more data to brick-and-mortar stores ?? Why CS is a team sport, and how sales, post-sales, and product teams need to be “Batman to each other’s Batman” ?? And the refreshing reminder: “We’re not saving lives” Listen and subscribe on Spotify, Apple, or by typing callingoperator [dot] com. Episode links in the comments. ?????? A note to our listeners from Laura Nicol ?? Balancing my role as Chief of Staff with producing this podcast is no small feat! Each fortnightly episode is a leap of faith, but I’m creating from the heart, stepping out of my comfort zone, and embracing the journey to create meaningful conversations at the operator level within our ecosystem. I would love your feedback. What do you enjoy about the podcast? What can I do to make it "10% better"? #CallingOperator #customersuccess #sales #startups #techoperator

Lisbon is buzzing for Web Summit tomorrow—it's always one of my favourite events of the year. I’m proud to be here representing global pre-seed, Australia’s tech ecosystem, cross-border strategies between Australia and the US, and sharing the latest developments we’re seeing in AI. I’m also excited to learn from founders building AI-first companies in Europe. Already feeling inspired by the solo GPs, GPs with cross-border focus, top global funds, and world-class LPs attending. Can’t wait to meet many of you over the week. Here's where you can find me: ?? If you’re a fellow investor or LP, let’s connect at Venture tomorrow. ?? For founders looking to achieve the perfect founder-investor fit, join me for this panel (https://lnkd.in/gGcCSAwp) on Tuesday at 12pm GMT (Stage 5, Pavilion 2). At Co Ventures, we’re dedicated to supporting pre-seed founders where at least one founder is Australian. But even if you’re not an Aussie founder, this session will unpack the essential ingredients for building strategic founder-investor relationships from day one. A big shoutout to my fellow panellists, Itxaso del Palacio, PhD and Hattie Willis, and our wonderful moderator,?Nick Huber. Looking forward to sharing insights and learning from each of you. #WebSummit #PreSeed #FounderInvestorFit #AustralianTech

Q3 was a high-volume quarter for us, and Q4 doesn’t seem to be slowing down! Last week, a founder reached out to learn more about Co Ventures, noting that our website seemed broken.?The truth? That’s actually how our website looks right now (Laura and I are dying inside, but it's the nudge we needed!). Prioritisation has been key this year, focusing on raising, closing Fund 1, investing, and supporting the companies we work for, sitting at #1. While our website's sparse, I’d love to share more about our investment thesis here to support pre-seed founders building their first investor target lists. Co Ventures exists to work for pre-seed tech startups with at least one Australian founder looking to scale globally, especially in the US. Unfortunately, we do not invest in hardware, biotech or regulatory complex companies. We focus exclusively on the pre-seed stage, so we’re looking for companies anywhere in their starting journey and up until you start seeing signs of early product-market fit—the moments when customers start actively pulling the product from the company. This usually looks like the first couple of letters of intent LOIs or?MOUs, maybe a few early customers, before your first design partner as you’re building, or maybe you have an MVP in the market. If this resonates and you’re raising a pre-seed round, we’d be delighted to learn more about your company. Please submit your details here:?https://lnkd.in/gqKhkQWE Shoutout to the founder who gave us the heads up!

One of the questions Cheryl Mack and I get asked the most is how we diligence companies and make investment decisions. My top tip? Keeping a Decision Diary is an ideal starting point for angel investors. This advice came from a friend early in my investing journey, and it’s been an incredible tool that I've honed and expanded on since then. By documenting your decisions, the reasoning behind them, and addressing your diligence questions beyond just "Does this company work?" you can assess the quality of your decision-making over time. In the spirit of the First Cheque Podcast's mission to open-source investor insights, our latest episode covers decision-making, checklists, decision diaries, anti-portfolio views, and the essentials of good decision-making hygiene. Plus, I've open-sourced my Decision Diary template on Notion for anyone interested ?? Links in the comments. cc Aussie Angels Co Ventures
