"Clarity comes from action, not thought." – Marie Forleo Founders, this one’s for you. The fastest way to crush fear, uncertainty, or procrastination? Do something. Test, iterate, adjust. The learning happens in motion—not in overthinking. Last week, I put that into practice: > I joined a call with Portland’s new mayor, because understanding local leadership matters when you’re building a business in this city. > I experimented with Napkin, an AI tool that turns your words into graphics in under a minute. I’m no graphic designer, but I play one on TV. ?? ?> Experimenting with my eye makeup when I record videos, because on-camera presence isn’t just about what you say, it’s how you feel. What can I say, still working on this one! #ProTip: Waiting until you feel “ready” is a trap. Take action, learn, refine, repeat. That’s how you grow. I used to get embarrassed when I made mistakes, now it's a reminder that I'm not done yet! What's ? tiny experiment you can run today? #Founders #Growth #Leadership #LifelongLearning #AI #Innovation Keith Wilson Oregon Entrepreneurs Network Co-pilot Communications

Digital communications ≠ social media. For many years of my career, I was categorized as “the social girl,” and during this same era, social media wasn’t taken very seriously. It was where kids spent time. Not adult consumers with wallets. This was back in the days when social media ad spending comprised less than 10% of digital ad spend and digital comprised only 30% of overall ad spend. I was on the farm team trying to get the pros to notice my ideas. Years past, and social media grew up, blew up and has reinvented itself many times over. It’s like the Beyonce of marketing. ?? Today, we?have a new issue. Many reading use the terms social with digital media interchangeably. They equate them as one in the same. It's just not true. Yes, social is a huge part of digital media. But… so is video, email, blogging (yep, still a thing), and one of my favorites... Podcasting. I’ve spent years helping executives refine their digital presence, and if there’s one thing I emphasize, it’s this: Executive comms isn’t one-size-fits-all. The best leaders show up across multiple formats in ways that feel germane to them: ?? Written (LinkedIn, blogs, newsletters) ?? Auditory (Podcasts, panels, keynotes) ?? Visual (Video content, live streams, serialized interviews) And, as they say in the tech industry, I have to eat my own dog food. If I want digital communications to mean more than social, I need to lead by example. I lean into podcasting. I was a creator back in 2018 and now have opportunities to occasionally make guest appearances. I love it. Auditory is so personal and a fantastic complement to short form visual content. Sharing a couple of stills from recent recordings. ???? Whether it’s a 60-second video, a thoughtful email to employees, or a 20 minute podcast, how you communicate as a leader matters. And it’s not just about where you show up, but how you connect across multiple modalities. PS: You could be doing this too. Yes, you could ????. #ExecutiveCommunications #Podcasting #DigitalPresence #SocialMedia Mary Czarnecki Ned Hayes Oregon Entrepreneurs Network

What do I want people to *feel* when they hear from me? ?? It's similar to that adage- "People don't remember what you said, they remember how you made them feel." It’s a question I work through with leaders every day—helping them find clarity in their voice and confidence in sharing it authentically online. The goal isn’t just to show up to transact ??, but to make a meaningful connection. If you’re curious about how leaders can thrive (and retain humanity) in the digital age, give this podcast episode of Stories and Strategies a listen. It’s full of practical tips and candid stories. Doug Downs, SCMP was fun to talk with. ?? Listen at the link in the first comment ?? If you aren't in a place to listen to audio, check out the slide show of fun quotes from our talk. Categorically I'm a comms + marketing executive, novelist, and artist. I'm a hybrid professional: I have multiple career frames in which I connect people, places and ideas and activate them to drive impact.

When Jess Jensen asked me to send a video of myself waving for her feel Good Friday, I didn't expect her to post it with such a beautiful story. But, I too am thrilled that we have grown a friendship over the years and are both trying as hard as we can to continue to learn, grow and drive positive impact. She's exactly the sort of person that has improved and brightened my life. If you are look for executive comms support, reach out to her! Thank you Jess!

Kristina wore big glasses—green, I think. She had a high-pitched voice, wild blonde hair, and a knack for ideas that I didn’t immediately recognize as brilliant. We were peers at Microsoft back then—Kristina in PR and me in Marketing, working for sister teams inside Building 37. One day, she popped into my office and asked if I’d heard of “mommy bloggers.” I hadn’t. She suggested that my work on the Windows social media program might resonate with these growing voices of influence. I shrugged her off. Looking back, I should have known she was different. Going back to 2011, Kristina was already a bridge-builder, unafraid to straddle worlds and experiment with new ideas. Kristina isn’t just multi-talented; she’s fearless. She defies molds and doesn’t apologize for it—a rarity, especially for women. A few examples of what she’s done of late: ?? Founder of the #floralheartproject: A tribute to lives lost to COVID, this movement filled NYC with heart-shaped floral arrangements and was featured in major publications. ?? TV creator: She’s filming her pilot, Penny Starts a Cult, as we speak. ?? Author and professor: Her work’s been featured in The Boston Globe, Elle, and The New Yorker. ?? Award-winning storyteller: Last month, she won the Moth Grand Slam. (Yes, even the holidays can’t slow her down!) ?? Day job? Fractional Chief Communications Officer for startups that need her magic. I’m lucky Kristina gave me a second chance after my bull-headed days in Redmond. (I blame the Seattle gray for my lack of vision back then.) Today, I’m inspired by her courage and reminded that there’s so much more to accomplish in this short life- don’t let anyone put you in a box. If you want to kick off 2025 with someone who will push you to think big—whether on art, books, film, communications, or business—find Kristina Libby. You won’t regret it. ??

  • Surprised this didn't get more pick up. I figured people would be all over a Bluesky vs. X discussion. ?? Input welcome!

In an earlier video, I mentioned that I was going to run a social media experiment. (Great holiday break activity ??) With all the hype around Bluesky Social and the evolution of X over the past few years, it’s time to put on our white lab coats and run a good ole A/B test. ?? The Plan: - Create fresh, brand-new profiles on X and Bluesky. - Open the accounts on the same browser and device. - Input the exact same demographic information (gender, location, etc.). - Follow no one. - Engage with no posts. - Ensure privacy settings are the same on both platforms. ?? The Measurement: - What types of posts am I being served (images, videos, memes)? - What themes am I seeing (politics, health, celebrity, business)? - What is the tone of the posts (negative, positive, neutral)? - How do I feel after 15 minutes on each platform? My Question for YOU: ?? How long should I run this experiment? 1. One week 2. Two weeks 3. One month Thoughts? ??

Tom is a NEW friend. After a decade away from my hometown of Portland, I’ve returned, welcoming this new era with a growing network of Portland-based friends. ???? Tom Perry and I share a connection from our Microsoft days. While we didn’t work together directly, his counsel last year felt like advice from a longtime friend. His insights were invaluable, and I immediately appreciated his candor and action-oriented approach. Tom’s expertise lies in guiding people at career crossroads—helping them refine their positioning to recruiters, confidently highlight strengths, and proactively architect what their next role should look like. If you're looking to take charge of your career path, you need someone like Tom in your corner. With a deep understanding of the tech industry and a new team offsite offering, Tom is someone I’d highly recommend. Fun fact: he lives in a neighborhood where I used to enjoy fancy dinners with my Grandma Cherie ??—a special place for me! And hey, if you recognize the college campus where he’s walking in the video, drop it in the comments! ?? #feelgoodfriday Engaged Pursuit #careertransitions #coaching #advisor #tech Co-pilot Communications

Communication is the ?? of good leadership. I'm remembering a mentor I met along my career journey who recorded Friday videos for her team of 1000+ technical staff. The videos were shot at her desk, without a producer and in whatever she wore to work that day. #chefskiss And they hit home. Those videos drew her team closer to her, showed humanity, respect and candor. In other words, they built trust. You can have the smartest people and strongest strategy—but without clear communication, your team is set up to fail. Today’s leaders face a unique challenge: navigating distributed teams, economic pressure, and 24/7 digital distraction. And many admit they’ve never been taught how to communicate effectively. Clear, frequent communication is no longer optional. Whether tackling layoffs, polarizing topics, or big changes, leaders must balance being direct with showing genuine care.
