Evoke and engage the wisdom and resourcefulness of the whole on behalf of the whole.

关于我们

Healthy communities, institutions and societies—perhaps even our collective survival—depend on our ability to organize our collective affairs more wisely, in tune with each other and nature. This ability to wisely organize our lives together—all of us being wiser together than any of us could be alone—we call co-intelligence. Co-intelligence is diverse people working really well together in ways that make things better from a bigger picture perspective, especially in the face of challenge and change. In its broadest sense, co-intelligence involves accessing the wisdom of the whole on behalf of the whole. Co-intelligence is emerging through new developments in democracy, organizational development, collaborative processes, the Internet and systems sciences like ecology and complexity. Today millions of people are involved in co-creating co-intelligence. Our diverse efforts grow more effective as we discover we are part of a larger evolutionary enterprise, and as we learn together and from each other. The Co-Intelligence Institute works to further the understanding and development of co-intelligence. It focuses on catalyzing co-intelligence in the realms of politics, governance, economics and conscious evolution of ourselves and our social systems. We research, network, advocate, and help organize leading-edge experiments and conversations in order to weave what is possible into new, wiser forms of civilization.

  • Last Friday, on Feb 28, we at the Co-Intelligence Institute had Scott Spann as our guest, for our monthly Real World Co-Intelligence call... Scott is as a psychotherapist-turned-systems-mapper who has developed a highly effective way of working with multi-stakeholder groups to build relationships, create shared systemic understandings, and converge on aligned action on key leverage points that the group as a whole has identified as strategic "acupuncture points" for shifting the larger system. We are planning to have him back soon for a "Part Two" session on the implications of his model for the current political situation. Do sign up for our newsletter (link below to the February issue) if you'd like to be notified!

  • Here's our final newsletter of 2024 where we share what we've been appreciating recently and a collaborative article which gives an insight into our internal process - our connection calls and our efforts to walk our talk by working together in as much of a co-intelligent way as we can! There's also an invitation to join our final community gathering of the year which is ***today*** at 9:30 am Pacific... 12:30 pm EST.... 5:30 pm BST... 6:30 pm CET, for 90 minutes (followed as usual with some additional connection time for those who would like to stay on.) Looking forward to seeing you there if you can make it, wishing you a happy end to the year and best holiday wishes to all... https://lnkd.in/eBVrY9Bx

  • Hi all, Rosa here... celebrating Tom's very timely blog post, "Certainty: Meet Clarity, Inquiry and Mystery". Enjoy the read... This post also inaugurates Tom's yearly winter fundraiser for the Co-intelligence Institute... but please don't let that deter you: no one will be turned away from reading it, for lack of funds! Of course, if you are inspired enough to contribute, we would warmly appreciate your gift. And, if you simply want to delve further into the content, this theme is also the subject of one of our Wise Democracy Pattern Language cards... will include that link below, in the comments section!

  • In "Multiple Perspective Capacity Building: Which Side Are You On?", CII founder Tom Atlee shares his heart-felt longing for forms of collaborative governance designed to help us find common ground, rather than to pit us against one another.... He also chose to include something that I (Rosa) recently wrote... we'd each written our respective pieces separately, then realized that the two pieces seem to fit together... curious what you think! https://lnkd.in/gtXp6Faq

  • Rosa here. Just stumbled across an insightful blog post by systems scientist Jessie Lydia Henshaw, looking at two different "cults" -- not only Christian Nationalism, but also Modern Capital Accumulation -- and the relationship between the two. How does a "culture" become a "cult"? And how can we support our family members / anyone who is wrapped up in these belief systems? Some highlights: "With national cults, as with smaller ones, their devotion to a false reality is both their greatest power and greatest failing, generally getting them in trouble. However, as with paradigm shifts in science, sometimes it’s the societal standard worldview that is so mistaken and getting its world in trouble, like the infinite growth “cult” of modern capital accumulation. So… it can be complicated." "I think the desperation from which today’s Christian nationalism culture became a real cult of false realities really first came from the natural growing frustrations of living in an endlessly self-disruptive economic system. I wish people noticed such things. It would help help people see the common needs we all have." "Today, we also need to factor in that the humans on earth have what you’d call much bigger fish to fry than straightening out what amounts to contagions of family bickering writ large. We have a collective war with nature to recognize and undo as fast as we can, too. Still, learning from one can help one find healing responses to the other; using humor, offering real friendship, and being responsible in not taking the bait are among the basics. Both kinds of aggressive cults are dangerous because they are quite unaware of their devotion to false realities." "Of course the shocking thing about humanity is that we are apparently all prone to mass self-deception of such a grand scale. So though interrupting its hate-spreading centers seems likely to be needed, those captured by it are victims to be cared for, as neighbor helping neighbor in need, and no one but the those exploiting the disturbed thinking should be seen at fault."

Co-Creating Desired Futures: Developing the Art and Science of Group Facilitation

Just watched this whole interview last night, and found it so deeply inspiring. Earlier, I'd posted an excerpt of it that Jon Alexander had featured. SO much wisdom here, especially for these times of so much uncertainty in the U.S.... we need to be doing things that are going to be helpful, regardless. And that embraces so many different things, including the wide-spread development of the group facilitation mindsets and skillsets needed for creating a thriving culture of grassroots democracy. Baratunde asks, "Are we repairing and propping up a failing system, or are we laying the groundwork for rebuilding a new one?" For many of us, it's clearly a both/and (no wrecking balls here!) and as Elizabeth points out, whatever the future may bring, we need wide-spread capacity for "doing life together". https://lnkd.in/gp8gjYJA

SO pleased with our most recent newsletter... The theme of which is, "Organizing as Creating Transformative Learning Communities". It's an opportunity to celebrate what our friends are doing, as well as to share an exciting upcoming event that we are hosting. (See link in comments below.) To begin with, we're featuring the National Coalition for Dialogue & Deliberation's Practitioner Mobilization for Democracy, and the associated BUILD Community of Practice... the upcoming pre-election gatherings hosted by the Living Room Conversations project... and workshops offered by the NAFCM: National Association for Community Mediation. We are also featuring CII's upcoming RealWorldCo-Intelligence Community Learning Call, showcasing Kaliya IdentityWoman Young and Day Waterbury's project on "Sequencing the Social DNA of the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force)", where they explored how this volunteer-run, values-based organization manages to be both open AND effective. Lots we can learn and apply, to our own contexts! We then celebrate some of the things we've been reading, including Jonathan Rowson's brilliant substack post on the IDG's... Heidi Burgess & Guy Burgess' comprehensive work on "Massively Parallel Problem-Solving and Democracy-Building"... and Hahrie Han's inspiring new book on the power of transformational organizing. And then we close with October's featured Wise Democracy pattern, along with a poem from our own Tom Atlee... Enjoy!!!

Join us Fri Oct 25th (10AM Pacific/6PM BST) for an exciting #RealWorldCoIntelligence call featuring Kaliya IdentityWoman Young who will explore how the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) embodies co-intelligence & wise democracy principles. https://lnkd.in/ewtiY23e More details below... Over two decades we’ve enjoyed watching our friend and associate, technologist Kaliya “Identity Woman” Young, becoming a global leader in open standards for secure sovereign digital identity. Recently she and her colleague Day Davis Waterbury did something no one else has done before: They used three pattern languages - notably including our Wise Democracy Pattern Language?- to analyze the potent organizational dynamics of the global network of tech engineers who continually evolve the Internet. They refer to their study as “Sequencing the Social DNA of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF)”. The IETF - a self-organizing network of working groups?owned by no one and located in no one place or organization - uses a form of rough consensus?to make its momentous decisions and an innovative version of expertise-rich random selection to select members to its few leadership positions. The whole network adapts rapidly to changing conditions - and they insightfully call their most official declarations of policy “requests for comment”, signaling that while in one sense these are finished drafts, which have already gathered and distilled a substantial amount of input, in another way they are simply signposts within a larger, ongoing conversation. That’s just the tip of the iceberg of their vast, unique treasury of evolving organizational practices and principles. Hidden implicitly among those principles and practices, Kaliya and Day identified Wise Democracy Patterns like Collective Distributed Intelligence, Privacy Guarantees, Generative Interactions, Nurturing Social Capital, and many dozen more. In this Real World Co-Intelligence Call, Kaliya will share more about what IETF is and does and what she and Day did and discovered in their research into its operations.?Since she is now more than ever an expert in our WDPL - as well as the GroupWorks process pattern language GroupWorksDeck.org and the Social Permaculture Pattern Language, all of which she and Day used in their study - she will be the point person describing the patterns that applied to her work. Tom will briefly note how the IETF embodies the WD Prime Directive and join Kaliya and the session attendees in open discussion of her unprecedented investigation of this remarkable co-intelligent enterprise upon whose work we all totally depend every day.
