It was fascinating to watch the demonstration of advanced.farm’s apple-picking machine during a company event in Davis, CA that coincided with the 2024 FIRA USA conference in Woodland, CA. The Advanced Farm robot can pick 24 bins’ worth of apples a day, or one bin per hour, which is a substantial increase over the average apple picker, who picks at ? bin per hour, or the top pickers who pick at ? bin per hour. Additionally, the robot can typically pick apples during the night and is able to run for 24 continuous hours, giving it a significant advantage over human apple pickers.
I congratulate Kyle Cobb, the company’s CEO, on the recent decision to pivot to apples from strawberries. Furthermore, during my conversations with apple orchard owners, I heard positive feedback about the robot’s performance in apple orchards on the US west coast. Automation & robotics is one of the most active areas of AgTech as innovations like Advanced Farm’s apple picking machine take on the most pressing challenges facing farmers today: labor availability, cost, and turnover, by replacing less-efficient, more labor-intensive manpower.?Given that more and more farmers are being forced to implement automation & robotics for long-term survival, I expect that investment into robotics & automation will only accelerate.
