Breakthrough Lithium-Sulfur Battery Could Extend EV Range and Lifespan Researchers at Florida International University (FIU) have developed a lithium-sulfur battery that significantly improves longevity, addressing a key limitation that has hindered its adoption. Lithium-sulfur versions are lighter, more cost-effective, and have higher energy density than traditional lithium-ion batteries. However, rapid degradation after just 50 charge cycles made them impractical for widespread use. FIU’s Battery Research Lab discovered that introducing platinum nanoparticles into the sulfur electrode dramatically enhances stability, retaining 92% efficiency even after 500 charge cycles. This breakthrough could revolutionize the EV industry by extending battery life, reducing range anxiety, and lowering costs. The platinum nanoparticles help prevent the buildup of polysulfides, a major cause of battery degradation, enabling long-term reliability. With third-party testing now underway, FIU’s innovation brings lithium-sulfur batteries closer to commercialization, offering a promising alternative to current lithium-ion technology. If successfully implemented, this advancement could lead to longer-lasting, more efficient EVs, further accelerating the transition to sustainable transportation.
