Our annual Spring Industry Workshop brought together experts from industry and academia to discuss Building Resilient Infrastructure: Civil & Environmental Engineering in a Changing World. With 60+ attendees, the event fostered insightful discussions on designing and funding resilience, operationalizing change, and the true return on investment for sustainable infrastructure. Thank you to our expert speakers and engaged attendees, who asked thoughtful questions and sparked important conversations about future collaboration to foster resilience.

Today is the inaugural World Day for Glaciers! Glaciers are changing rapidly, and understanding their future is crucial for communities that depend on them. Civil & Environmental Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University Assistant Professor David Rounce and his research group, the CryoTartans, are leading efforts to quantify glacier melt, rising sea levels, and changing water resources due to climate change. Through fieldwork, remote sensing, and computational modeling, they provide critical insights into how glaciers are evolving. Their work informs climate adaptation strategies, helps predict regional sea-level rise, and supports decision-makers working to protect water supplies and mitigate natural hazards. Rounce is a leader in the field of glaciology, having presented his expertise at the United Nations Conference of Parties, receiving the International Glaciology Society’s Firn Award, and an Early-Career Research Fellowship from the National Academies. His team applies their expertise to broader environmental challenges, including urban flooding and other climate-related issues. Tomorrow, Assistant Professor David Rounce will take part in the United Nations celebration of World Day for Glaciers & World Water Day 2025.
