New Report: On a The Fulbright Program grant, Patricia Aufderheide recently collaborated with Professors Changmin Lee and Emmanuel Moonchil Park at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies to map the state of copyright practice among Korean documentarians. A huge thank you to this stellar team for helping us bring "The IMPROV/E Workshop" to The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. This workshop was the funny fusion of #improv and #socialimpact. Through this experience, attendees experienced how comedians process some of the most pressing issues of our time and learnt some practical tools and exercises to bring into their own #advocacy work. Thank you Vicki Shabo and Ishita Srivastava for sharing thought-provoking information on issues like #gender inequity, #paidleave, narrative frameworks and the tussle between individualism and contextualism. These formed the "source material" for a variety of improv exercises led by CMSI's Bethany Hall and the amazing improv guru Shannon O'Neill along with DC's own improv masters Shawn Westfall, Jamal Newman and Eva Lewis. Caty Borum shared the research on how humor is proven to create catharsis and connection, build resilience for oppressed people, and evoke feelings of hope and optimism—emotions that are positively correlated with willingness to shift attitudes and take action. CMSI's Carolina Gallo and Varsha R. worked behind the scenes to make this event happen which would not have been possible without Malka Lasky, Kate Villa, Trés McMichael and the amazing team at The Kennedy Center. New Journal Article: Rosalind Donald and Lucas Graves have co-authored this article titled "Making them pay: Comparing how environmental facts matter in two accountability contexts" in Sage New Media & Society. This article makes the case for what they call #accountability contexts as a valuable heuristic to think about how facts matter in public life, drawing attention to how different discursive and institutional contexts shape the ways in which facts can count. They examine two environmental case studies:?#TheTerritory, a #documentary about the struggle of the Uru-eu-wau-wau community in Brazil to protect their land from illegal invaders, and the fact-checking organization Climate Feedback’s partnership with Facebook to flag misinformation on the platform. https://lnkd.in/eH45TbWB

New Journal Article: Paula Lazili Weissman, Caty Borum, and David Conrad-Pérez?published a new CMSI study (funded by Paramount and facilitated in collaboration with nonpartisan #civic engagement organization, When We All Vote) in?Mass Communication & Society Taylor & Francis Group.?The article, entitled "All Talk, Not Enough Action: Civic Engagement in U.S. Entertainment TV at a Time of Crisis," examines how civic leadership and civic engagement are portrayed on the top entertainment TV shows in the United States. The Center for Media & Social Impact (CMSI) engaged in a two-year research initiative – funded and supported by the Perspective Fund – and have now released their new study that features filmmaker perspectives on the most overlooked & urgent issues from the last decade of social impact work in documentary film - based on the input of over 70 filmmakers & impact producers across 50 documentary impact campaigns around the world. This research ultimately endeavours to lift key perspectives and immediate challenges for wider deliberation and consideration for a field amid a rapid transition.
