I believe the there's a key skill that makes the difference between: 1) good colleagues and ?? great colleagues 2) good managers and ?? great managers 2) good leaders and ?? great leaders 3) good teams and ?? great teams 4) good companies and ?? great companies That key skill is communication ?? ?? I'm always on a treasure hunt to find the next valuable book ?? and podcast ???for me and the people I coach and mentor on communicating more effectively. My most recent find was, "Think Faster, Talk Smarter" by Matt Abrahams, Lecturer at Stanford University Graduate School of Business (a book and a podcast). I was thrilled when Drew Neisser and the CMO Huddles team invited Matt speak at the #CMO #SuperHuddle in Palo Alto last week. For those who missed it, Matt shared a ton of practical advice. Here are my 3 key takeaways: ??Master small talk: Small talk is about connecting with people. It's not about you being interesting. It's about you being interested. Break the ice by asking a question or making an observation. Use this powerful phrase: Tell me more. ?? Actively listen to others: Listen for the bottom line. Paraphrase it to ensure you understood it. Take a beat before you respond. ?? Respond to 3 simple questions: What? So what? Now what? Logically connect ideas together. I particularly like Matt's frameworks and clear examples of how to hone your communication skills.
