San Francisco Civic Center Public Realm Plan received the 2024 American Architecture Award for Urban Planning/Landscape Architecture from The Chicago Athenaeum and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design + Urban Studies! We envision a public space for all San Franciscans: a ceremonial gathering place that welcomes everyday use and inspires civic pride. The plan prioritizes the Urban Forest as an ecological catalyst and unifying Spatial Framework. A high priority for the community, radically increased tree planting provides access to nature, creates habitat, and sequesters carbon. New pavilions and storefronts invigorate existing structures, street frontages and open spaces with micro-retail, food and beverage uses, public restrooms and operations functions. This vision was developed through an extensive community-based process that brought together cultural institutions, community groups, thousands of city residents and workers, and governmental stakeholders. ? Reach 3 of San Francisco Waterfront Flood Study’s Draft Plan is South Beach / Mission Bay, which uses a combination of berms/levees, seawalls, nature-based features such as creek enhancements, and closure structures for the bridges. In addition, the Draft Plan proposes adding short floodwalls on piers in this area.? ? The Draft Plan is part of the San Francisco Waterfront Flood Study by the City of San Francisco and U.S. Army Corp of Engineers (USACE), which analyzes the coastal flood risk and effects of sea level rise for the 7.5 miles of waterfront from Aquatic Park to Heron’s Head Park. It is a critical milestone in San Francisco’s continued, long-term efforts to defend our waterfront against flood risk and sea level rise, while also enhancing the seismic stability of our waterfront’s flood management structures and complementing waterfront improvements. ? ? The YouTube Campus cultivates sustainability through low carbon materials and sustainably-sourced mass timber.? ? The campus features a variety of outdoor courtyards that feature tiered seating and site furniture that was recycled from the milling of large-bore eucalyptus trees harvested at the site. These courtyards each have their own character and serve as a place for employees to collaborate, recharge, dine, or gather.? ? Based on the concept of a woodland, the campus landscape design is thoughtfully integrated with the building and supports social, physical, and personal wellbeing through the creation of outdoor spaces for work and social engagement.? ? Amongst the 740-acre Tilden Nature Area, just north of Berkeley, sits the Environmental Education Center – a beloved visitor’s center and museum that has educated generations of visitors about the diverse ecologies of the Tilden Nature Area and the surrounding East Bay Regional Park District.? ? The opportunity to connect people to nature starts at the moment of arrival with the new landscape, creating a welcoming experience that highlights and interprets the native plants, animals, and cultural histories of the park along a new network of accessible paths and trails. The site design for the landscape includes a variety of distinct and differentiated outdoor classrooms and spaces that support visitor access and comfort, as well as opportunities for education and exploration.? ? Thanks SITELAB urban studio for touring the recent developments on Treasure Island and Yerba Buena Island with us. We love getting to share the innovative vision and transformation from streetscapes and green infrastructure to parks and open spaces.
Who doesn't love a field trip? SITELABbers checked out the new development under way at Treasure Island and Yerba Buena Island. ?? Thank you to our colleagues CMG Landscape Architecture, David Baker Architects, and Treasure Island Development Group for the generous personalized tour, setting the context of the big picture transformation and vision and allowing us to geek out on everything from tower floor plates, to shared street detailing, to bike lane widths (just over one "Andrew"). Trails, parks, and breathtaking views, and a stop at Mersea Restaurant completed the day. ?? #TreasureIsland #YerbaBuenaIsland #UrbanDesign #SanFrancisco

Inclusive and equitable community engagement is crucial for developing resilient solutions to rising seas.?From RISE-UP to San Francisco Waterfront Resilience Program, OAAC ADAPT, and San Rafael Sea Level Rise Adaptation Plan, CMG is leading resilience and adaptation planning around the Bay Area.
"There is positive momentum to implement more nature-based adaptations, but we need support to change the business-as-usual mindset," writes Pamela Conrad, ASLA, founder of Climate Positive Design and ASLA's inaugural Biodiversity and Climate Action Fellow. "Nature-based solutions are documented to be approximately 70% more cost-effective than gray infrastructure. However, most nature-based climate adaptation is not funded despite the fact that 800 million people will be affected by coastal flooding by 2050." Dogpatch Power Station (also known as Potrero Power Station) re-engages 29 acres of San Francisco’s industrial central waterfront by creating a vibrant bayfront mixed-use and mixed-income neighborhood addition to the Dogpatch neighborhood with places to live, work, visit, and play.? ? "The project will have seven acres of open spaces — including sports facilities and a park centered on a large steel structure that housed a massive generator and a nearby 300-foot-tall, decommissioned smokestack — a dock, and the area’s first public access to the waterfront in more than 150 years." - Patrick Hoge, Nob Hill Gazette? ?
