The #COP16 on Biological Diversity reconvened at the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations in Rome between 25 and 27 February, providing a critical juncture for global biodiversity conservation and the role of science in informing international negotiations. “The most positive aspect to come out of the negotiations in Rome is that we were able to reach an agreement on financial resource mobilization, a monitoring framework and planning mechanisms to guarantee reporting of progress,” says CMCC researcher Cipriano, who participated in the proceedings as coordinator of the European Regional Chapter and the Italian National Chapter of the Global Youth Biodiversity Network. 关于我们
The Foundation Euro-Mediterranean Centre on Climate Change (CMCC) is a research centre on climate science and policy. The CMCC: - Integrates all studies on climate change and adaptation/mitigation policies - Promotes collaboration and synergy with international organisations, policy makers, and industry - Provides technical-scientific support to the institutions involved in the negotiation and international cooperation activities. CMCC produces thorough studies regarding climate variability, causes, and consequences, through the development of high-resolution simulations based on global models of Earth systems and regional models, with a particular focus on the Mediterranean area. CMCC's research assures the maintenance of highly reliable products and instruments, which are made available to the scientific community and to further studies on climate science and climate change impacts. CMCC maintains, checks, and develops numeric model simulations, which are used to study the effects of climate change on the following areas: economy, agriculture, coastal areas, marine and land environment, hydrogeological cycle, carbon cycle and human health.

#SaveTheDate | ?? CMCC Lectures "Resilience: State of science and practice" ?? 17 March 2025, 15:00 CET From climate disasters to infrastructure failures, resilience is no longer a choice: it’s a necessity. Consistent and evidence-based approaches to measuring it are more urgent than ever. However, the lack of academic consensus on methods of resilience quantification and applications, fragmented across federal agencies, creates challenges in coordinating responses and evaluating the effectiveness of resilience-building initiatives. Igor Linkov, a distinguished expert in risk prevention and management, will dive into the latest science and practice in developing standardized resilience metrics and models. Linkov will explore how these metrics can be applied across multiple federal agencies to improve coordinated climate change preparedness, response, and recovery at a national level. ?? The Lecture will be a unique opportunity to discuss the future of resilience management and its implications for effective policy-making. The global community has taken a crucial step toward financing biodiversity conservation. After stalled negotiations last year, #COP16 in Rome resulted in an agreement to mobilize at least $200 billion annually by 2030 to support developing nations in protecting biodiversity. For the first time, a permanent mechanism for biodiversity funding was also established, ensuring financial flows continue beyond 2030. Yet, is this enough to bridge the gap between negotiations and reality? "What COP16 means for the future of biodiversity": today on our new #ClimateUpdates issue. #SaveTheDate | Adaptation AGORA webinar "Citizen engagement in climate adaptation processes: lessons learned from Adaptation AGORA and CLIMAS’ experiences" ?? 9 April 2025, 15:00-16:30 Citizen engagement is one of the key factors to ensure successful climate change risk adaptation strategies and plans, however decision-makers and practitioners often find it difficult to truly generate an interest and proactive participation from the individuals living in their regions. Two Horizon Europe projects, CLIMAS and Adaptation AGORA have been focusing on implementing specific frameworks and methodologies to generate greater interest, engagement and deliver co-creation, co-production, co-design and co-implementation of climate change adaptation processes. #SaveTheDate | #CMCCTalks "Advancing urban modelling in regional atmospheric models: insights, challenges and applications" ?? CMCC Talks ?? 24 March 2025, 12:00 CET ??? Speaker: Angelo Campanale – CMCC ??? Moderator: Jeremy Pal – CMCC As urban areas continue to expand and global temperatures rise, understanding the complex interactions between cities and the atmosphere is critical. Regional atmospheric models incorporating urban parameterizations play a crucial role in addressing urban climate challenges, particularly in predicting and mitigating the effects of extreme heat, air pollution, and urban heat islands (UHI). By integrating detailed urban processes into high resolution climate simulations, we can enhance our ability to assess urban climate risks and develop effective adaptation strategies. ?? The Mediterranean region is highly vulnerable to #climatechange, with rising temperatures and decreasing rainfall posing risks to agriculture, water management, and disaster preparedness. In this context, accurately predicting climate trends 5 to 10 years in advance is essential so that decision-makers and stakeholders can adequately prepare. A?new study, conducted entirely by CMCC researchers, reveals how decadal climate predictions provide a more reliable and accurate tool for forecasting winter rainfall in Southern Europe and North Africa compared to traditional long-term climate predictions. "Climate services for cities. Shaping climate adaptation and mitigation actions" ?? Climateurope2 fourth Webstival ?? 11-12 March 2025 Climateurope2 promotes insightful community discussions on the design, use, quality, business innovation, and policy drivers of climate services. Continuing our series of webstivals and festivals, the forth westival will take place on March 11th and 12th, 2025. The #webstival will offer the occasion to follow up on the topic of standardisation, one of the key pillars of Climateurope2, and how to develop climate services for adaptation and mitigation. #Mitigation will be one of the main themes of the event, as a complementary strategy to adaptation to address climate change and its impacts. The event will gather together many different representatives of new Horizon Europe projects and will focus on the Climate Digital Twin of Destination Earth as an opportunity to provide high resolution information at both global and local scale. The webstival will finally offer the chance to discuss how to improve equity in and of climate services and reflect on any potential impacts of AI on this topic. ??
