Food banks, shelters, afterschool programs, and advocacy groups provide essential services but often struggle to defend against cyberattacks due to limited funding and IT resources. A new study from UC Berkeley's Center for Long-Term Cybersecurity and the City of San Francisco highlights these challenges and examines how cities can step up for local cyber defense. "One of the big things about this study in particular is it represents a big narrative shift in the role cities play in cybersecurity," Sarah P. said. "Cities are often thought of as ransomware victims. We're really trying to push for the idea that large cities, that capable cities, can play this role as a local hub of cyber defense." CLTC and the UC Berkeley School of Information are currently accepting applications for a Assistant/Associate/Full Professor of Information working at the intersection of digital security, safety, and trust. An ideal candidate will have some core technical foundation, but will be working with technology to address other parts of the security, safety, and trust system that depends on people and institutions as much as it does on technology. This includes areas like trusted/trustworthy algorithms and algorithmic decision making. We are looking for scholars whose work takes into account multicultural environments and issues of poverty and exclusion on a global basis and assesses trust more broadly than simply transparency or explainability. Today the University of Chicago Harris Cyber Policy Initiative (CPI) and National Rural Water Association (NRWA) have announced the first group of participating water utilities in its cyber volunteer project, DEF CON Franklin! This project will pair volunteer cybersecurity experts with water utilities, and will also distill lessons learned that can be applied broadly across the nation. “At the White House, we spent an enormous amount of time trying to devise ways to better secure our water systems in light of China's Volt Typhoon attacks.?However, most of our time was spent on the water utilities supporting military installations," said Jake Braun, CPI Executive Director?and former White House acting Principal National Cyber Director. "There are another 49,000 water utilities that do not support military bases and still need to improve their cybersecurity because they either don’t have the staff, or the resources, to protect themselves.” Read more about this important initiative: https://lnkd.in/ggByFyJd

The convening of the International Network of AI Safety Institutes is taking place today and tomorrow in San Francisco with the goal of kickstarting collaboration ahead of the AI Action Summit in Paris in February. The Center for Long-Term Cybersecurity AI Security Initiative has been meeting with some of these participants as we engage in a project to help facilitate greater multistakeholder input into the development of Frontier AI Safety Frameworks by leading AI companies. We have published a draft working paper on the pressing topic of developing intolerable risk thresholds for frontier models: https://lnkd.in/g8W_2PtR. We wanted to put this out as quickly as possible following a multistakeholder roundtable last week, knowing that it may be of interest to those meeting in SF this week. But we are continuing to work on this ahead of the AI Action Summit, so take a look and let us know how we can make this stronger and more useful. Also let us know if you would like to be part of future meetings on the topic of AI risk thresholds. This is such an important moment, and companies and governments must hear from civil society and academia as they make these consequential decisions. Many thanks to Anthony M.
