I am beyond thrilled and honored to take the torch from John Lavelle and step into the Board President role of Community Legal Services and Philadelphia Legal Assistance. These are two organizations that I am honored to have been a part of for the past 10+ years as a Board member. The work that they do to improve and impact the lives of their clients is inspiring and is needed more than ever right now.
CLS and Philadelphia Legal Assistance celebrated yet another year of outstanding leadership from our Board of Directors. In our first meeting of the year, we welcomed Diana Cortes, George Donnelly, and Josie B. H. Pickens as new members. We thanked and congratulated outgoing members for their many years and many contributions to CLS, including Dorothy Boykin, Tom Duffy, Bridget Henry, Lauren McKenna, Jeffrey N. Rosenthal, and Marisa Tilghman. This was also the final meeting where John Lavelle presided. John's tenure as Board President was marked by immense dedication to civil legal aid, thoughtfulness in decision-making, and remarkable support of CLS's Executive Director Debby Freedman and PLA's Executive Director Maureen Olives, our staff, and our clients. Thank you, John, for all you have shared with us.

This week, CLS's Homeownership & Consumer Rights Unit helped put together the first-ever statewide tangled title/heirs property conference. We convened the conference planning committee, recruited panelists, and moderated three of the six panels. Over 65 lawyers, paralegals, and policymakers attended the conference to share information and discuss emerging issues. Image descriptions: People sitting at tables in a large conference room. ? I’m thrilled to announce that this summer, I’ll be interning at Community Legal Services (CLS)! ?? As I continue my journey through law school, I’m eager to gain hands-on experience in legal services and work alongside some of the most dedicated legal professionals in the field. CLS’s commitment to not only providing access to justice for underserved communities but also advocating for key policy changes aligns with my passions, and I can’t wait to contribute to their important work. Thank you to Gillian Schaps and the rest of the CLS team for affording me this opportunity, Dean Jill Friedman, Pam Mertsock-Wolfe for your mentorship, and the Maida Fellowship for their generous support in making this possible. Thank you all for believing in me. This internship is a chance to not only learn but also to make a real difference in people’s lives. I’m excited to engage with clients, tackle complex legal issues, and gain insight into the powerful role of legal services in promoting equity and fairness. Looking forward to a summer full of growth, learning, and impact. Let’s do this! ???? #PublicInterest #LawSchool #Internship #CommunityLegalServices #AccessToJustice #SocialJustice #Gratitude

Feeling extra grateful for this Justice Rising team and all they do for us here at CLS!
"Justice for all" means a lot to this group of Justice Rising Advocates (JRA). As Executive Committee members of JRA, they dedicate their time to learning about and promoting civil legal aid in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and beyond. The group gathered this week to strategize on ways to support CLS's clients. To learn more about JRA, visit?https://lnkd.in/eASYRpy. Last month I completed my service as President of the Boards of Community Legal Services and Philadelphia Legal Assistance. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to work with the exceptional Boards and professionals of these organizations. I am especially thankful for the friendship, guidance and support of Community Legal Services Executive Director Debby Freedman, Philadelphia Legal Assistance Executive Director Maureen Olives, and incoming President Kim Takacs. The dedication of the attorneys and staff of these organizations to improving the lives of their clients and achieving justice is truly inspiring.
