We are pleased to announce our contribution to the Sustainability Recommendation Paper titled "Promoting Textile Waste Management and Recycling in the Garment, Footwear, and Travel Goods (GFT) Sector", now published on the Asia Garment Hub. This paper highlights actionable strategies to address textile waste and promote sustainability in Cambodia. Key recommendations include adopting circular economy systems, strengthening government leadership through regulations and recycling infrastructure, and fostering collaboration across sectors to improve waste management and support local recyclers. Polyester Recycling in the Moroccan Textile Sector! In continuation of our efforts in building circular supply chains in the North Africa region, we are very excited to announce our latest collaboration in partnership with Decathlon and on behalf of Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, with the key objective to establish a circular polyester recycling system in Morocco. This initiative aims to transform the Moroccan textile industry by addressing the pressing issue of polyester textile waste. With Morocco generating 83,200 tons of textile waste annually, the country presents significant opportunities for the implementation of a circular economy model within the sector. By engaging local stakeholders, providing training, establishing textile waste management and recycling systems, the project seeks to reduce waste and create new employment opportunities. What are the upcoming sustainability targets in humanitarian aid? We recently participated in AidEx - The Global Humanitarian Aid Community 2024 Palexpo, Geneva, the largest trade fair and conference in humanitarian aid. During the event, the leading humanitarian aid organisation UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency outlined ambitious sustainability goals for 2050, such as integrating recycled materials into disaster relief products, reducing? CO2 emissions through sustainable procurement and transport and a shift towards localised sourcing practices and supply chains. Challenges were also discussed around balancing innovation and cost-effectiveness in meeting these new procurement standards. We enjoyed attending key workshops and discussions, meeting with industry leaders and like-minded organisations, fostering connections for future collaborations. “The hospitality and kindness you experience in Pakistan is unmatched” says our founder, Marina Chahboune, every time we return from a visit to the region and this trip was no different. We recently joined forces with Reverse Resources to visit the Punjab region in Pakistan to participate in the KnowTex conference in Faisalabad, but the trip quickly evolved into something more: The warm reception from our hosts and the people of Pakistan led us to extend our stay. During their time there, Marina Chahboune, Manzoor Fareed Hashmi and Nin Castle visited 12 factories and facilities, including waste handlers, recyclers, and vertically integrated manufacturers. They witnessed both the immense potential and the strong desire for sustainable development within the region’s textile industry. The dedication, hard work and the inspiring and enthusiastic conversations with the teams they met truly reinforced our belief in the power of collaborative actions. Closed Loop Fashion would like to express our sincere gratitude to the incredible people of Pakistan for their hospitality and for ensuring our safety throughout the trip. Exciting news from Jakarta! On October 3, 2024, the Circular Fashion Partnership Indonesia was officially launched at Alila SCBD, marking a major step toward a circular textile industry in Indonesia. Closed Loop Fashion is proud to be a key implementing partner, drawing on our decade of experience in Indonesia’s textile sector. The event gathered over 120 participants, including key government stakeholders from the Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas Republic of Indonesia, Ministry of Industry, Ministry of Environment & Forestry, The Royal Danish Embassy and ASOBSI/Indonesia Association of Waste Banks. Their support highlighted the government’s commitment to circularity in textiles in Indonesia. Moreover, industry leaders such as Indorama Corporation, Busana Apparel Group, H&M Group, adidas and Syre discussed how circular collaborations can benefit the entire value chain. Closed Loop Fashion emphasised the importance of building local capacity and leveraging innovation to scale textile recycling, particularly post-industrial waste recovery. This initiative, led by Global Fashion Agenda in partnership with the National Lead Rantai Tekstil Lestari, Reverse Resources, Circle Economy, Closed Loop Fashion and funded by the H&M Foundation, unites brands, manufacturers, recyclers, waste handlers, and government bodies to drive sustainable change.? We are thrilled to share insights from Pakistan’s 2nd National Conference on Recycling in Textiles (KnowTex) held in Faisalabad, where our founder, Marina Chahboune, was invited to speak about advancing circular supply chains in the textile industry. The conference, hosted by the National Textile University (NTU), discussed sustainable textile practices and focused on critical topics such as advancements in recycling, improving the collection, sorting and traceability of textile waste, and regulatory frameworks to establish an effective circular ecosystem. Closed Loop Fashion had the opportunity to showcase our ongoing key initiatives to promote circularity that include assessing post-industrial textile waste systems, establishing standardised waste management practices in factories, and building collaborations to create effective circular supply chains. Pakistan's textile industry, which employs 25 million people, faces significant challenges due to climate change. By transitioning to circular practices, Pakistan can secure its resources, reduce risk and position itself as a leader in the sustainable global textile market. The conference offered a unique platform for all key stakeholders in the textile recycling supply chain to foster connections and exchange valuable insights.
