?? Saturdays are for Conferences and Community!?? Today, I had the opportunity to attend the Community Health Summit, hosted by CSL and CliniSpan Health. The event was free and very fulfilling! Walking into the summit this morning, I felt a bit anxious, unsure if anyone from my community would be there. But to my surprise, I saw Regine Smith, another MPH student! As like-minded students, we sat together in awe, absorbing the wealth of knowledge shared about the impact of clinical research. One of the highlights was hearing from guest speaker Nadine Barrett, PhD, MA, MS. She spoke passionately about the importance of trust as a cornerstone for community buy-in and participation in clinical research. Dr. Barrett emphasized how barriers often prevent communities, especially communities of color, from engaging in clinical research and highlighted the need for inclusive approaches that foster trust and understanding. One fascinating tidbit from Dr. Barrett’s talk was about the dosage of Bayer’s Aspirin. Did you know that the 81 mg dose with the heart symbol on the pill was determined through clinical trials? Originally, aspirin was found effective for men but caused adverse effects in women. Dr. Barrett explained how research revealed that 81 mg is the safe standard dose for both men and women, making it a crucial discovery in ensuring effective and safe use for all. As a public health graduate student concentrating in community health practice, it's crucial for me to engage with the community to understand its needs, challenges, and potential solutions. Events like these reaffirm the importance of community engagement in healthcare and remind me why I chose this field. Together, we can work towards a more inclusive and equitable future in community and clinical research! #CommunityHealth #ClinicalResearch #PublicHealth #MPHStudentLife #HealthcareInnovation #DiversityInResearch #TrustInScience #CommunityEngagement

On June 8th, I had the pleasure of attending and supporting a panel discussion during the Community Health Summit at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Charlotte, North Carolina. This was one of three summits sponsored by CliniSpan Health and CSL this year and boy oh boy did they show up and show out for the Charlotte community! From the live musicians and delicious Caribbean fusion lunch flavors, to the vendor set up for local clinics and businesses to meet with community members, and the empowering key note delivered by the one and only Dr. Nadine Barrett, PhD, MA, MS...every detail made this an inviting and inclusive experience for members of the Charlotte community to learn about clinical research and how we've all benefitted from the power of investigational medicine. One of the many great reminders from Dr. Barrett's keynote message: We don't need to fix communities. We need to fix our industry and shift the perspective from "how do we get communities to trust us?" to "how do we become trustworthy?" Health equity is deeply influenced by the work we do in clinical trials, and this event a great example of how the industry can ground itself into the journey and invest in opportunities, big and small, so as not to lose site of the intentional and sustained actions necessary for our communities, patients, and families. Stay tuned for even more summits coming in 2025!
