Employee: Based on some research, I'm underpaid compared to my peers in the industry. However, based on my experience and results, I'm worth it. Boss: We can't afford $10k right now. During your appraisal, we'll revisit your salary next year. ~ 2 months later ~ Boss: My best employee just quit! HR: We know. They said they didn't feel valued. Boss: Not valued!? That's BS! I formally recognized them in our quarterly meeting and gave them a $200 gift certificate! HR: It was more about the salary. Boss: Ugh. How much will it cost to replace them? HR: The headhunting fee will be $20,000, plus we'll need to pay $10k more to attract a suitable candidate based on the job market. Boss: WHAT? That's not in my budget! HR: Oh, and you'll also need to spend the next three months training them... ____________________________________ While formal recognition is wonderful, your best employees will not stick around if they are not compensated properly. Pay them what they are worth today, or pay more (for less) tomorrow.
