We might’ve missed our birthday on socials but we sure did celebrate! Two years of growth, learning, and leading with purpose! This couldn't be more true. When I first became a manager, I struggled to get it right. I knew the principles of good leadership in theory, but putting them into practice was a different story. It took time, mistakes, and learning from experience to understand how to truly lead. As Tobi Oluwole wisely says, a good manager has the power to change someone's life. Now, over 20 years later, I’ve gained a wealth of knowledge and continue to grow each day. Here are some of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned along the way. ??Promote Work-Life Balance: Encourage your team to prioritize their well-being by taking breaks, using vacation time, and maintaining a clear boundary between work and personal life. Let people share ideas, concerns, and feedback freely, and make sure they feel heard. Listening is key, but follow-through is just as important. ??Encourage Growth: Give team members opportunities to develop new skills and grow in their careers. Clear pathways for progression, combined with recognition for their efforts, can make all the difference. ??Strengthen Team Unity: Encourage teamwork, collaboration, and mutual support. Employee: I'd like to request a $10k raise. I've exceeded my targets by $100k each quarter and feel I deserve it. Boss: You're doing great, but where did you get this number? Employee: Based on some research, I'm underpaid compared to my peers in the industry. However, based on my experience and results, I'm worth it. Boss: We can't afford $10k right now. During your appraisal, we'll revisit your salary next year. ~ 2 months later ~ Boss: My best employee just quit! HR: We know. They said they didn't feel valued. Boss: Not valued!? That's BS! I formally recognized them in our quarterly meeting and gave them a $200 gift certificate! HR: It was more about the salary. Boss: Ugh. How much will it cost to replace them? HR: The headhunting fee will be $20,000, plus we'll need to pay $10k more to attract a suitable candidate based on the job market. Boss: WHAT? That's not in my budget! HR: Oh, and you'll also need to spend the next three months training them... ____________________________________ While formal recognition is wonderful, your best employees will not stick around if they are not compensated properly. Pay them what they are worth today, or pay more (for less) tomorrow.
