?? What a fantastic fews days at the Africa Media Festival! Thank you to?Christine Mungai?for inviting us,?and everyone?who made the festival so engaging and thought provoking. ?? We met so many inspirational media leaders who are deeply passionate about changing the climate narrative and really making a meaningful difference. The concept of climate culture was felt deeply as was our push for creating products and services that are needed and relevant to the audience. ?? With our regional partner?Wits Centre for Journalism, the content series?'climate: in my culture' was loved. People were calling family members to ask what this phrase was in local language and then shared their relationship with nature. It continues to be a great journey into language and ethnology that we will take across the world. ?? We also loved seeing our local friend and member Lady E Ejiro Umukoro take to the radio and student classroom training to?talk about climate and its cultural relevancy. ??? Thanks to?Kenya Editors' Guild (KEG)?for inviting us to a panel?- it was really insightful to hear issues and challenges journalism is facing first hand and also see the global parallels. Thanks also to Baraza Media Lab! The momentum and energy is real. Missed us at AMF? • ???Webinar Recap: How climate affects what audiences care about??? ?? Our brilliant panel: Khalil A. Cassimally (The Conversation), Elsie Roderiques (Common Cause), Rishad Patel (Splice), Mattia Peretti (News Alchemists) and moderated by Shereen Daver (cXc) Discussed: How reframing climate as part of people’s daily lives can make conversations less polarising, more relevant and even a little exciting. ?? Key Takeaways: ? Understanding what intrinsically motivates audiences can reshape climate services and products ? News organisations can inspire discourse?and?positive?action for climate mitigation?by making climate issues personal and easy to connect to ? Journalism has a huge mission, vision and purpose to play in the climate conversation ? Journalists must stand to account, seeing?that audiences aren't "news avoidant" it's that the news doesn't serve their needs, wants or even turn up where they are ? Climate news needs to be human and be in service of peoples needs and intrinsic values. Missed the discussion? • ???Exciting news!?climateXchange?is partnering with the?Centre for Economic Performance?at the?The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE)?to contribute to a critical yet underexplored research question:? Can culturally framed climate journalism drive climate engagement and action? Led by?Dr Ekaterina (Katya) Oparina?and?Dr Christian Krekel, this pilot study will test how climate stories framed through cultural themes (such as food and local traditions) affect audience engagement and climate-related intentions. Using a randomised online experiment in South Africa, participants will be exposed to different storytelling approaches to measure: ? Behavioural intentions (likelihood to engage with climate content) ? Psychological closeness (how connected people feel to the issue) ? Emotional resonance (hope, pride, inspiration) This pilot lays the foundation for a larger, longitudinal study on how culturally adaptive storytelling can be a tool for climate action. Shoutout to?LSE Consulting?for their support in bringing this project to life. We look forward to sharing insights from this research. Stay tuned! #cXc #climateculture #climateaction #audienceengagement #research

  • ?? Just published: our?Making Climate Pay (4th edition): Southeast Asia?report https://lnkd.in/eAuCNHj7 ?? In response to the challenges facing the SEA landscape, some of our brilliant kXc attendees and cXc members have developed revenue-generating ideas for sustainable climate journalism editorial products. Our report explores the cXc approach to?developing?local revenue-generating news products designed to inform and inspire on climate action and re-write climate narratives,?whilst also paying their way. We present 3 innovate solutions: ?? ClimUp: a hyperlocal app that gamifies learning about the intersection of climate and everyday life. It develops climate reporting skills by asking questions in your language, and expanding your knowledge about how climate affects every aspect of life, giving it meaning and understanding all from a verified news standpoint. The app app that assists news storytellers in flipping the disengaging climate news narrative by upskilling and learning. ?? Flipper: a climate journalism-run cultural festival incubator that facilitates, collaborates, coordinates and co-creates annual climate festivals with and for communities that are most affected by climate change. Each festival brings together artists, journalists, and community members to share their climate oriented stories that increase awareness about climate mitigation. The festival extends the life of a climate story as it is embedded into culture, making it relatable and part of things people love in life. ?? PLANTpup: think tamagotchi (veg plant) meets Duolingo (climate education)! This is a vegetable growing challenge that encourages users to look after and nurture a living plant. This gamified platform is informed by collaborations with scientists and academics where journalists fill the climate information gap. Players also receive science-based tips and are rewarded as they hit the milestones that indicate good health of their vegetables. People share their progress with a supportive community. The impact is to show a collective groundswell galvanising sustainability. Read more about these?innovate products and the?solutions they?offer to re-shape climate narratives???
