It’s time to call on these companies to use their influence to catalyze meaningful climate policy action and live up to their green reputations. These companies must close the gap between their public support of climate policy while simultaneously funding efforts that oppose it. Our ClimateVoice #GuiltbyTradeAssociation scorecard launched today. Why do companies that care about climate let the Business Roundtable and U.S. Chamber of Commerce use their membership dues to lobby against clean energy investments, climate disclosure laws, and strong pollution standards? Urge these companies to step up and tell them that climate leaders don't outsource policy obstruction to trade groups!

Remember that group of friends you had growing up that seemed cool and put together? ?? On the surface they got good grades and excelled in extracurriculars? ?? But a few bullies in the group always took things in a negative direction? Starting fights, breaking stuff, only looking out for themselves, using others for money and reputational cover? ?? Maybe you just got to the point of saying "this isn't me or what I stand for"? ?? That. ?? But for corporations. ??

Today, ClimateVoice released a new Climate Policy Obstruction Scorecard spotlighting how 15 U.S. based companies are obstructing climate policy by financially supporting the Business Roundtable, U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and hiring lobbyists who also work for the fossil fuel industry. We invite you to share this new scorecard with your colleagues and raise your voice for stronger climate policy leadership. As you know, large cross-sector trade associations such as the Business Roundtable and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce have consistently opposed clean energy investments, climate disclosure laws, and strong pollution standards. From lobbying against the Inflation Reduction Act, to millions spent on misleading advertising, these powerful U.S. trade groups have a long history of opposing climate action. It’s time for these companies who are members to stop lobbying against climate policy progress. The new scorecard also assesses publicly disclosed paid lobbyists who are lobbying on behalf of these companies while also working for the fossil fuel industry. This data was collected from the F Minus Lobbyist Database, which shows that more than 1,500 state-level lobbyists are working both for multiple stakeholders (whether it be environmental groups, schools, companies, or governments) as well as for fossil fuel companies with conflicting views. ClimateVoice calls on companies who value climate and sustainability action to step up to be strategic leaders by opposing the obstructive positions of these trade groups. Visa exerts significant influence on climate policy through their trade association memberships in the Business Roundtable (BRT) and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, direct lobbying, and public statements. The BRT and the U.S. Chamber have consistently opposed clean energy investments, climate disclosure laws and strong pollution standards. It’s time to hold Visa accountable for the company they keep by remaining members of these trade associations. I’m urging Visa to be a strategic leader by using their influence to counter these positions and the fossil fuel interests setting the agenda for these trade groups.
