Proud to see our CEO, Justine Lee, featured for her leadership in climate technology and her service on the board of the The Governors Island Foundation. Her time at Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP shaped her skills at navigating deals and investments, and now, the shifting landscape of climate innovation. "The Biden-era infrastructure law and Inflation Reduction Act ushered in some incredible tailwinds for climate technology and propelled a lot of innovation in the space?over the last few years. With the new administration’s shift in priorities, the next few years are going to be more difficult... We are optimistic that corporate partners, foundations and other funders will step into the breach so that the startups we are working with don’t lose momentum." We’re excited to welcome a new addition to the ClimateHaven community! Founded by?David Tew, Step Function, LLC is leveraging the chemical potential in abundant ferrous iron rich natural minerals (eg: olivine) and industrial wastes (eg: metal slags and mine tailings) to produce hydrogen and methane from water and carbon dioxide. Step Function’s fuel production technology offers the potential for the synthesis of low-cost?fuels at globally relevant scales – without the use of significant amounts of electricity, or any biomass. Furthermore, in industrial waste conversion applications, it will also potentially recover valuable critical minerals while rendering reactive mine wastes inert.

Reflecting on an insightful conversation about investing in early-stage climate ventures, covering everything from deal flow to building a successful fund. A huge thank you to Drew D'Alelio for leading such an engaging discussion and to the audience for asking so many important questions. Our key takeaways from the talk: Early-stage investing: Investors seek unique, patentable IP that is both commercializable and scalable, balancing innovation with real-world market fit. Green flags in early stage companies? Strong teams, clear market demand, and de-risked pathways to scale. Building a climate fund: It takes capital, expertise, and strategic partnerships to launch a successful fund. Climate investing requires patient capital and strong alignment with government, industry, and research institutions. Beyond capital: Funds like Connecticut Innovations don’t just provide funding, they also offer mentorship, hands on strategic support, industry connections, and commercialization support to help startups succeed.. Yanchen Wu, founder of Visual Dynamics has been recognized as Forbes 30 Under 30 in 2024. Yanchen previously spent seven years as a researcher during his PhD studies at the Advanced Power & Energy Program.
