?? Despite 2024's surge in climate adaptation fund announcements, actual fundraising and implementation have been slower than expected. A climate-resilient infrastructure fund from BlackRock, based on a so-called "blueprint" from the Insurance Development Forum, was scheduled to make a first close at end-2024. That deadline was blown. Invesco's Climate Adaptation Action Fund (ICAAF) was also meant to close at year-end. Now a Q2 close date is mooted. There are good news stories too, though -- notably, the European Investment Bank (EIB) made a $52.5mn commitment to an Infrastructure Climate Resilient Fund (ICRF) set up by the Africa Finance Corporation and Green Climate Fund. ICYMI: on yesterday's episode of Climate Proofers, Avinash Persaud of the Inter-American Development Bank spoke about why the future of adaptation finance depends on Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) upping their game: ??Key Quote: "We need a lot more low-cost, long-term loans, and that's kind of the business the MDBs are in.?They have a AAA rating, so that allows them to borrow inexpensively, and they're not for profit. They have a development mandate so they can "on lend" to the countries at rates that basically just cover their costs.?They don't lose money. And whatever money that they may end up making because they've more than covered their costs, they plow back in to lending more." ?? The European Commission is streamlining its tangle of sustainability rules through three ‘Omnibus’ packages, targeting key regulations like the CSRD, CSDDD, and the EU Sustainable Taxonomy. Simplifying the Taxonomy — the classification system that underpins the bloc’s sustainable reporting and green finance framework — could encourage more investment in adaptation measures. Here's what Linda Romanovska, a member of the Platform on Sustainable Finance, had to say: "The argument is: include under ‘adaptation’ as many activities as possible and as quick as possible.
