Switzerland isn't doing enough to comply with the landmark #KlimaSeniorinnen ruling, according to last week's decision from the Council of Europe's Committee of Ministers. It's a big win for the KlimaSeniorinnen and a decisive step forward on the road towards climate accountability. It's now up to the Swiss government to set out a rigorous plan that keeps its citizens safe from climate change, in line with its legal obligations. According to the Committee, Switzerland must demonstrate that its regulatory framework complies with human rights, and is based on "a quantification...of national greenhouse gas emissions limitations." Recently, the European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change published its long-awaited report on scaling up carbon dioxide removals (CDR) in the EU.?? ? This report highlights the critical need for transparency around the contribution of CDR to achieving the EU's climate policy objectives. One of the key recommendations of the report is that countries set separate legal targets for emissions reductions, permanent removals, and temporary removals. ?This is crucial to ensure robust governance on carbon removals in Europe. ? ? For more on our work on the integrity of climate targets and the implications for climate litigation, read Lucy Maxwell's and Alyssa Glass' blog:?https://lnkd.in/er-_iSfD.? ?
