In 2020, climate activist Sophia Kianni founded Climate Cardinals, a nonprofit bridging the gap for non-English-speaking communities by translating vital climate resources into 100+ languages. With a network of 10,000 passionate volunteers in 80+ countries, Climate Cardinals is collaborating with global partners like UNESCO and UNICEF to drive change and empower communities worldwide. ?? Meet Hana Melese Maru, a ClimArts artist alum! ?? Hana Melese Maru is an Environmental Engineer and self-taught artist. Hana was in the first cohort of the ClimArts Fellowship. Within Climate Cardinals, she serves as the Co-director of International Relations and she facilitates collaboration between regional presidents and the global team. Hana is also the local Ambassador of Plastic-Free, and she is the founder of Akababinet, a platform to cultivate sustainable mindsets among youth through creative media production, such as digital and traditional art made from waste, to drive behavioral shifts. ?? If only we had a Department of Climate Efficiency . . . Our commitment to climate action is stronger than ever ??

Honored to be given the Muhammad Ali Award for Giving ?? Muhammad Ali once said, “Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on Earth” ?? I believe that through Climate Cardinals, we are paying that rent by building a world where everyone, regardless of language or age, can be part of the climate solution ??? Although less than 1 in 5 people worldwide speaks English, 90% of climate research is published exclusively in English. In response to this gap, Climate Cardinals has built the largest youth-led climate organization of its kind, uniting over 16,000 volunteers across 134 countries. Together, we’ve translated 3 million words of climate resource into hundreds of languages. I want to dedicate and share this award with my incredible team at Climate Cardinals. Leaders like Hikaru Hayakawa and Carl Philip Dybwad remind me every day that there is no responsibility more important than cultivating the next generation and giving back to the earth??
