Scaling back emissions is required for a liveable future. In addition, communities need to have the resources to implement solutions for adjusting to a treacherous and uncertain future. When communities do not have the ability to adapt, impacts – and thus displacement, violence, and cultural erasure – are amplified. Mozambique’s forests cover nearly 40% of the country, forming a critical part of the Miombo woodlands that stretch across southern Africa. These forests are vital biodiversity reservoirs of spiritual significance and sources of food, medicine, and income for millions. However, deforestation rates are alarmingly high, with Mozambique losing an estimated 267,000 hectares of forest annually. The culprits are many: expanding monoculture plantations like rubber and eucalyptus, illegal logging, mining, and large-scale infrastructure projects. The women-led collectives of Hatay have a vision for a thriving future. They are embracing agroecology, local traditions, and feminist economy principles to create a blueprint for how communities can rebuild in the face of government apathy and natural disasters. After the devastating 2023 earthquake that hit southern Türkiye and northern Syria, collectives in Hatay, with the support of Thousand Currents and our movement partner World March of Women Association of Asia (WMW), have led the reconstruction process, proving that solidarity and sustainability are at the heart of a better future. From July 2023 to June 2024, the CLIMA Fund moved $5M in 278 grants to grassroots movement groups in 77 countries. Our grassroots partners advanced food sovereignty by uplifting agroecology, artisanal fishing, and pastoralism; secured climate policy and built broad political coalitions to win key protections for the Earth; produced equitable, extreme weather-resilient energy; and advanced Indigenous sovereignty and gender justice. Resourcing Earth Defenders draws on the practical experience of grassroots activists and philanthropists to map the state of the increasing violence against Natural Resource Defenders in Latin America and philanthropy’s response.
