?? The average carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration in the atmosphere was 4??2??1??.2?? ppm (parts per million) in 2023, up by 3??.0?? ppm from 2022. ?? For the last 100 years the ppm of CO2 has been increasing every year. In the last ten years the average annual increase has been 2??.5?? ppm. Comment below with what you think the average CO2 ppm atmospheric concentration will be for 2024 and read on to learn more about annual CO2 trends. ?? Similar to recent years prior, in 2023, the atmospheric concentrations of CO2 naturally increased between the months of January through May and then decreased between May through August due to the plants in the northern hemisphere growing and absorbing CO2 from the atmosphere. Once those plants started to decay in September, they released the CO2 they absorbed back into the atmosphere so the concentration started to rise again. ?? While there are annual increases and decreases naturally, it is important to address and take action on the rapid increase of CO2 being emitted into the atmosphere by industrial activity and consumption processes. Currently more CO2 is being emitted into the atmosphere than the natural processes can regulate so the atmospheric concentration of CO2 continues to increase each year. ? But like, what is ppm and why is it important?! Goooooood question! Let’s dig in! ?? Concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere has been under 3??0??0?? ppm for the last 800,000 years, until the 1900’s that is! ?? With the industrial revolution and burning of oils and fossil fuels for energy, CO2 ppm and concentration in the atmosphere has increased steadily. With more CO2 particles and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, heat is trapped and our planet warms! ?? Experts say if we surpass 4??5??0?? ppm, the average global temperature will rise more than 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial averages, which is not ideal for the planet and all inhabitants. ?? We need to reach 3??5??0?? ppm or below (waaaaay below actually…) in order for our planet to thrive. ?? Reducing emissions is key, removing carbon from the atmosphere is imperative! So…knowing CO2 concentration should be as important as knowing the weather. Don’t ya think?! Check back next month for our report and check daily CO2 levels here: https://lnkd.in/eKRt5bh ?? ??? Welcome to our City Emissions series, featuring Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates! ?? Did you know that according to the United Nations and the World Bank, 70% of CO? emissions come from cities?! In this series, we’re highlighting the carbon footprints of individuals in cities around the world and showcasing innovative initiatives and solutions these cities are enacting to reduce their impact! ???? Dubai’s per capita (fancy talk for per person) annual CO?e emissions: 16.9 tonnes Dubai green city highlights: ?? The Sustainable City is 5 million square feet in Dubai that features a perimeter of trees and vegetation that filter the air, offers a buffer zone for noise pollution and provides shade for the bike and horse riding tracks. Walking is encouraged throughout the city, which features 5 car-free residential clusters. Waste and water are recycled throughout the city. Located in the center is a Wind Tower that cools the air and solar panel covered parking areas. The clean energy is used to power the city. There is also a farm area that runs the length of the city and features 11 biodomes that grow vegetables and herbs. ?? The city is aiming to recycle 100% of its wastewater and reduce desalinated water consumption by 30% by 2030. Dubai currently reuses 90% of its waste water for irrigation, fire fighting, sewage treatment, and more. Besides increasing water security, water recycling also saves the electricity required for energy-intensive desalination (removing salt and water to make water drinkable), which reduces greenhouse gas emissions. ?? Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy has a goal to provide 100% of its energy production from clean energy sources by 2050. The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park is one of Dubai’s key initiatives to achieve this goal. The 1st phase of PV panel installation was completed in 2013 and reduced 15,000 tonnes of carbon emissions in one year. As of 2023, the 5th phase of PV panel installation was completed and the solar park was now reducing over 4 million tonnes of carbon emissions each year. When the 6th and final stage is completed in 2026, the park is estimated to reduce 6.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually, cover an area roughly the size of Copenhagen, and it will be the world’s largest solar plant on a single plot. ?? Which of these initiatives would you like in your city?! Tell us in the comments and keep your eye out for our next city highlight! ? We hear about CO? a lot, but what is CO?e?! CO? (carbon dioxide) is just one of several greenhouse gases, such as methane, nitrous oxide, ozone, and water vapor, that contribute to global warming. While carbon footprint typically just includes measurements for CO?, CO?e (carbon dioxide equivalent) includes other greenhouse gases to provide a more holistic picture of the impact. #c40cities #dubai #unitedarabemirates #uae #cityemissions #carbonfootprint #sustainablecities #greeninitiatives #greencity #solarenergy #greenhousegas

?? United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5: Gender Equality ?? Let’s dive into UNSDG 5, "Gender Equality." Its mission? To achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. ?? The Challenge: The world is falling short of achieving gender equality by 2030, with the global gender gap only 68.5% closed, according to the WEF’s 2024 Global Gender Gap Report. At this pace, full gender parity will take 134 years—5 generations beyond the SDG target. Ending child marriage could take 300 years, while closing gaps in legal protections and achieving equal workplace leadership may require 286 and 140 years, respectively, underscoring the urgency for accelerated action toward equality. ?? Impact: Women in the next generation are expected to continue spending an average of 2.3 more hours per day on unpaid care work than men. For each dollar men earn globally, women make just 51 cents, and only 61.4% of women of prime working age participate in the labor force, compared to 90% of men. Climate change could worsen gender disparities, potentially pushing up to 158 million additional women into poverty—16 million more than men—and heightening food insecurity for 236 million women compared to 131 million men. ?? Targets: The goal includes 9 targets, with 1673 actions taken to date. Key aims are to end discrimination and harmful practices against women while ensuring equal opportunities in leadership and economic rights. ?? Stakeholders: Key organizations include UN Women, HeForShe, UNICEF, World Health Organization, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, and UNESCO. ?? Funding: Funding aims to promote gender equality and empower women through initiatives such as education, healthcare, and combating gender-based violence. ?? Individual Action: Voice your support for equal pay for equal work, and advocate for policies like paid family leave and reproductive rights to create lasting change. Challenge gender stereotypes and stand up against harassment. Share domestic responsibilities at home. Amplify women's voices in conversations and support women-owned businesses. ?? Corporate Action: Endorse the UN Global Compact and Women’s Empowerment Principles to promote gender equality. Prevent gender-based discrimination and strive for gender balance across all levels of your business and supply chain. Provide equal pay for equal work and create a safe and inclusive workplace. Promote women’s leadership, foster career development opportunities, and drive equality through investment, community initiatives, and advocacy.
