??? Welcome to our City Emissions series, featuring Rotterdam in The Netherlands! ?? Did you know that according to the UN and the World Bank, 70% of CO? emissions come from cities? In this series, we’re highlighting the carbon footprints of individuals in cities around the world and showcasing innovative solutions these cities are enacting to reduce their impact! ???? Rotterdam’s per capita (fancy talk for per person) annual CO?e emissions: 12.9 tonnes ?? Global average per capita annual CO?e emissions: 6.3 Rotterdam green city highlights: ?? Almost 80% of Rotterdam is under sea level so it has created water squares and plazas, which are public spaces that double as drainage infrastructures and help the city prevent floods. In heavy storms, excess water is channeled into these water squares and they becomes temporary reservoirs. When the rain stops the water slowly flows into the ground and nearby canal. ?? You've probably heard of green roofs in cities, but did you know there are other colors? In Rotterdam, colored roofs are part of the city's climate adaptation strategy. Four colors represent four functions: blue roofs retain water, green roofs add greenery and biodiversity, yellow roofs produce renewable energy, and red roofs add social value. ?? Floating Office Rotterdam (Powerhouse Company) is the world’s largest floating office, designed for climate resilience. It’s energy-neutral, powered by solar panels, with a self-sufficient water system, and natural cooling from the river it is on. Built with recyclable timber, it rises with sea levels, showcasing adaptive architecture for flooding cities. ?? Which of these initiatives would you like in your city? ? We hear about CO?, but what is CO?e? CO? (carbon dioxide) is just one of several greenhouse gases, such as methane, nitrous oxide, ozone, and water vapor, that contribute to global warming. While carbon footprint typically just includes measurements for CO?, CO?e (carbon dioxide equivalent) includes other greenhouse gases to provide a more holistic picture. #c40cities #rotterdam #thenetherlands #netherlands #nederlands #europe #cityemissions #carbonfootprint #sustainablecities #greeninitiatives #greencity #greencities #solarenergy #greenpower #greenhousegases #cityemissions #co2 #ghg #climatechange #urbanplanning

?? The average carbon dioxide (CO?) concentration in the atmosphere was 4??2??7??.1?? ppm (parts per million) in February, up by 0??.5?? ppm from January. ?? Each year, atmospheric concentrations of CO? naturally increase between the approximate months of October through May. One reason is because when it is fall and winter in the northern hemisphere, plants start to decay and release the CO? they have absorbed back into the atmosphere. June through the September is when the vegetation in the northern hemisphere is growing and blooming. It is also when that vegetation is absorbing CO? out of the atmosphere, which causes the atmospheric CO? levels to decrease. ?? While there are annual increases and decreases naturally, it is important to address and take action on the rapid increase of CO? being emitted into the atmosphere by industrial activity and consumption processes. Currently more CO? is being emitted into the atmosphere than the natural processes can regulate. ? But like, what is ppm and why is it important?! Gooood question! Let’s dig in! ?? Concentration of CO? in the atmosphere has been under 3??0??0?? ppm for the last 800,000 years, until the 1900’s that is! ?? With the industrial revolution and burning of oils and fossil fuels for energy, CO? ppm and concentration in the atmosphere has increased steadily and was 4??2??5?? ppm on average in 2024. With more CO? particles and other greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere, heat is trapped and our planet warms! ?? Experts say if we surpass 4??5??0?? ppm, the average global temperature will rise more than 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial averages, which is not ideal for the planet and all inhabitants. ?? We need to reach 3??5??0?? ppm or below (waaaaay below actually…) in order for our planet to thrive. ?? Reducing emissions is key, removing carbon from the atmosphere is imperative! Knowing CO? concentration should be as important as knowing the weather. Don’t ya think?! Check back in next month for our report and check daily CO? levels here: https://lnkd.in/eKRt5bh ?? ?? What does the journey of an #Arctic advocate look like? It's not complicated and everyone can and should be one for starters because we are all impacted by what happens in the Arctic. My personal journey started in 2022 where I had the opportunity to learn from Sir David King. I was mostly learning about his project on ocean biomass regeneration, but in conversations with him and his team, I learned about projects that were focused on re-freezing the Arctic. That was a ?? moment - that we could invent this type of "technology" and more poignantly, that there was this need. Read more about refreezing the Arctic here: https://lnkd.in/gdadeCMW When Women and Climate invited Sherri Goodman, international climate and national security expert, to be our keynote at BOLD in March of 2024, my knowledge of the Arctic deepened, adding a layer of national security into the mix. This paper on climate and national security was published and signed off by Sherri in 2007 but everything rings true today and is a good read for all audiences: https://lnkd.in/gZ9EYRFQ Through Women and Climate's World Ocean Day Virtual Summit in June of 2024, I had the honor of meeting Sally Ann Ranney, a woman who has dedicated her life to environmental advocacy and through her work with Global Choices, has become a leading advocate on Arctic protection and sea ice loss awareness. Notably, the team at Global Choices is working on a moratorium, a legal document that aims to protect the Arctic, its resources, and its natural inhabitants. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/gu4RdqfE. I'm not an Arctic expert, but these experts have taught me the critical importance of protecting the Arctic. It was crucial to bring this conversation to the masses, and SXSW is an incredible platform to spread awareness and knowledge to creatives, innovators, corporates, and more. A huge thank you to our speakers Sherri Goodman, Sally Ann Ranney, Kishla A. for showing up and sharing their expertise. If you're attending #sxsw2025, join us on March 10 at 4pm. We'll be recording the session, stay tuned. Our SXSW session: https://lnkd.in/gEtMkyUy
