Meet Laura her mission is to help today’s learners succeed in science with the help of print-and-go science comics. As a teacher, comics were the only way to reach her struggling readers. These comics, called Cool School Comics, have the power to break down tricky concepts into manageable chunks. They improve accessibility for struggling readers, English language learners, graphic novel lovers, and everyone in between. Her goal is to bring this impactful teaching tool to more teachers. Why Accelerate- Laura applied for the Accelerate competition because she needed help taking this concept to the next level. There are so many aspects to building a business, and as a solo entrepreneur, she was being spread thin. The Accelerate competition not only offered the chance to help Laura obtain the capital she needed to enhance my business, but it also offered a new community of entrepreneurs to collaborate with. Partnerships are key to the success of Joseph & Mary's Home. One partnership that has paid many dividends has been with the Cleveland Leadership Center and its Cleveland Bridge Builders program. A team of professionals participating in the career-building program spent several months in early 2021 evaluating the work environment at Joseph’s Home (prior to Mary's Home opening) as part of their Leadership Action Project (LAP). Their objective was to help enhance efforts to retain, develop, recruit and promote a diverse staff, and to make recommendations for achieving the goal of providing a more supportive, enjoyable workplace. Several of their recommendations were implemented and one of the project's participants became an employee, Director of Fund Development Erin Gay Miyoshi. Erin talks about the importance of the Leadership Action Project in this new video that features stories from alumni about their experience in the Bridge Builders program. Last week, the Civic Leadership Institute Fall cohort was immersed in Arts & Culture. The session kicked off with a special cello performance, followed by a dive into the economic and community impact of the arts on our region. They then learned about a 100+ year old institution that provides a wide range of pathways to get people engaged in music. Thank you to Rachel Bernstein of The Music Settlement and Heights Arts, Jeremy Johnson from Assembly for the Arts, and Geri Presti from The Music Settlement for joining us that morning. On Friday, the Advanced Leadership Institute Class of 2025 dove into the topic of equity and access through the lens of two Cleveland neighborhoods: Lee/Harvard and Jefferson-Puritas West Park. The session dove into what needs to happen to make these neighborhoods the new place to live, work, and play for those who live there now and those who want to move there. Last week, the OnBoard Cleveland Class of 2025 participated in workshop led by Dr. Ken Schneck to learn how to better brand themselves personally and professionally, including creating and practicing an elevator pitch. They also took an assessment to learn which values they hold in highest regard and how that influences how they show up in relationships, at work, and in the civic landscape. They concluded their day with CLC staff members who shared opportunities to get involved with organizations whose mission and work aligns with their values.
