Sam Bernzweig, a 17-year-old Eastmoor resident and rising senior at Columbus Torah Academy, had plenty of time and nothing to do last summer. So, to fill that time he started making bagels after stumbling upon a how-to bagel-making video. According to Sam, that casual social media surf has blossomed into a business for the new entrepreneur. “Typically when people ask me how I started, I tell them that because I’m Jewish it’s in my DNA, but really I was just bored, so I decided to try bagel-making out,” he told the Columbus Jewish News. “I tried the recipe and was amazed at my success. After that, I began to make bagels every Sunday until it became a tradition. Every week, I would make about two dozen bagels and give them out to friends in the community.”

It is said a leader is only as strong as their support system. And for many organizations, the relationship between its president and CEO, and board chair is more than just a partnership – it is often a pivotal force that can be felt throughout all operations. For the Jewish Federation of Cleveland, which is celebrating its 120th year of operations, that adage – and the power the president-board chair relationship holds in steering a community through good times and bad – can’t be overstated, according to president emeritus Stephen H. Hoffman. Hoffman spent 44 years with the Jewish Federation of Cleveland, including 35 years as president. In the role from 1983 to 2018, Hoffman was succeeded by Erika Rudin-Luria in 2019.

The Greater Akron Jewish community is more than twice the size previously estimated, with about 7,000 Jews residing in the area, according to The University of Chicago and Brandeis University which collected data for a new study. “When I was hired to be the CEO of JEWISHAKRON, I was told there is likely 2,000 or 2,500 Jews in the Greater Akron Jewish community,” Daniel Blain, CEO of JewishAkron, told the Akron Jewish News on Aug. 13. “This study came back with a population estimate of 7,000 Jews in Greater Akron.” The Akron Jewish Community Study was conducted in 2022, with the purpose to better understand the Jewish community of the Greater Akron Area, Matthew Boxer, an assistant research professor at the Cohen Center for Modern Jewish Studies and the Steinhardt Social Research Institute, told the AJN on Aug. 14. The study’s results were recently released.

For most students, the new school year means a return to oft-practiced routines of classrooms, friends, homework and extracurricular activities. It can mean the start of a new grade, a switch from private to public schooling, or even a return to familiar hallways but into classrooms without already-established friends. Considering how these adjustments could be difficult, especially for Jewish students seeking a connection to their community in a public school setting, Congregation Agudas Achim in Bexley is hoping its new lunch club for Bexley middle and high school students can help bridge those gaps. The club, open to Bexley Middle School and Bexley High School students, had its first meeting on Aug. 26. It will meet monthly at nearby congregants’ homes during each school’s lunch break, said Agudas Achim Rabbi Josh Warshawsky.
