  • – October marks Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Awareness Month, a vital opportunity for homeowners, tenants, healthcare facilities, and businesses to assess and improve their indoor air environments. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports that Americans spend approximately 90% of their time indoors, where air pollution can be two to five times more toxic than outdoor air. The Cleveland Division of Air Quality (CDAQ) is committed to ensuring that every resident in Cleveland has access to a healthy home environment. However, maintaining optimal indoor air quality can be challenging for families living in older homes that may need repairs or updates, especially those dealing with economic hardships, absentee landlords or out-of-state property management. Factors Affecting Indoor Air Quality: - Mold and mildew - High humidity levels - Poorly maintained HVAC systems - Pests and asthma triggers - Tobacco smoke - Chemicals from cleaning products Steps to Improve Indoor Air Quality: - Increase ventilation by opening windows or using air purifiers - Monitor humidity levels with a humidity meter (optimal range: 30%-60%) - Use an air cleaner suitable for your home or business environment - Refrain from smoking indoors - Identify and repair leaks to prevent mold growth - Regularly replace furnace filters with those rated MERV 13 or higher To learn more about improving indoor air quality, the Cleveland Department of Public Health's IAQ Program will host a special CLEANinCLE community meeting that includes a panel discussion and resource fair highlighting indoor air quality. CDAQ will share the latest CLEANinCLE updates as well as how residents can get involved in an air quality story mapping experience. Following this update, industry experts Kim Foreman and Donald Collins from Environmental Health Watch will lead the indoor air quality discussion, along with Sarah Fanger, Executive Director of the Indoor Air Quality Association (IAQA), who will address when and why indoor air quality testing is appropriate. . Brandon Roby of Buckeye Advanced Remediation will offer insights into identifying and managing mold. Other city departments and organizations, including the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability, Community Development, Department of Aging, and Northeast Ohio Black Health Coalition, will be present to provide resources and answer questions. Event Details: - Date: Tuesday, October 22, 2024? - Location: Collinwood Recreation Center, 16300 Lakeshore Blvd? - Time: 4:30 PM – 7:30 PM Refreshments will be provided, and children are welcome.
