As we enter a new decade, the Cleveland Cord Blood Center’s dedication to quality, collaboration and integrity is positioning us as a leader and innovator in the cord blood cell therapy arena.

The month of January was a busy month at the Cleveland Cord Blood Center (CCBC).?In total, we shipped an impressive 9 units for clinical transplant! Two of the units that were shipped were collected at Fairview Hospital by Michele Colangelo, DO and Sarah Lengen, MD (both pictured). To date, ten units collected by Dr. Colangelo and nine units collected by Dr. Lengen have been shipped for clinical transplant! Special thanks to our amazing donating mothers across our collection sites, and to our dedicated collectors, such as these two, who are helping to save lives one cord at a time!?THANK YOU!

Congratulations to the U.S. public cord blood banks who, in 2024, were recognized with the “Be There” award by the NMDP!??This award highlights the ability of the public cord blood banks to ship high-quality cord blood products for clinical transplant, often with very little advance notice.?The public cord blood banks are experienced in accommodating these urgent requests, often shipping products either the?next day or the?same day, depending on the patient's and transplant center’s needs. Pictured below are CCBC team members, family, and friends who took part in the Light the Night Walk sponsored by fellow nonprofit organization the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). The walk was held in October in Cleveland, OH with proceeds from the event going to LLS to help find cures for cancer.?This aligns with CCBC’s mission to advance umbilical cord blood cell therapy treatments to save lives, enhance health, and expand knowledge one birth at a time.? ? As we near the end of 2024, we would also like to express our gratitude to everyone who has supported our mission. In honor of World Cord Blood Day, our amazing nursing staff and collectors at our collection sites located in California, Georgia, and Ohio, gathered together to celebrate with trivia games, food, and fun!?This important day, which is celebrated annually on November 15, raises awareness about cord blood to save lives through research and direct transplant. The Cleveland Cord Blood Center recently hosted a farewell party for Marcie Finney, with special guests, in-person and via Zoom, a trivia game, and many heartfelt sentiments. Marcie is embarking on an exciting and new professional opportunity and CCBC wishes her all the best and is grateful for her 15 years at CCBC. As Executive Director, Marcie led the transition of CCBC?from a small lab entity to a nationally and internationally renowned public Cord Blood Bank. She is leaving CCBC in great organizational and operational shape, with management and staff well prepared and excited to continue the delivery of high-quality cord blood for patients in need.

Exciting News from Cord Blood Connect 2024! ?? We are proud to announce that Kim Vincent, our dedicated Lab Manager at CCBC, presented a poster at the 2024 Cord Blood Connect conference! Her work, titled “Reduction of Laboratory Supply Costs and Streamlining of Ordering Process,” is a significant step forward in Cord Blood Bank Management, Administration, and Sustainability. Kim?and co-authors Sara Shields, Marcie Finney, Wouter Van’t Hof, and Dawn Thut have developed a strategy to reduce laboratory costs by approximately 13% while streamlining the supply ordering process. This innovative approach ensures that CCBC remains compliant with licensure requirements while maximizing efficiency—a particularly remarkable achievement for a standalone, not-for-profit public cord blood bank like ours.
