Founder + CEO @ WerQ AI | Building Tools to Transform the Future of Work?? | EX FAANG | Culinary Assassin ?? | 中文 ???
As a first-time non-technical founder, I knew bootstrapping would be tough and that I would need a lot of help, but I didn’t realize just how fast expenses could pile up. I heard stories of founders spending thousands—even tens of thousands—on their MVPs. I could never, so I had to get creative. Here’s what worked for me in keeping costs low and staying lean: Leverage Startup Perks and Partnerships Many companies offer generous discounts for early-stage startups through perks programs like AWS Startups, GitHub for Startups, Google for Startups, and HubSpot For Startups. I used Clerky for incorporation and legal, and Pulley for cap table management. What’s even better—these programs/companies often partner with one another to provide their customers with discounts, which means I always check my existing software perks and partnership list, before adding anything new to our tech stack. I’ve saved THOUSANDS by taking advantage of these partnership perks. Use Flexible, Cost-Effective Tools I gravitated toward affordable, flexible tools that could adapt to our needs. Platforms like Notion, Airtable, Canva, Slack and Visily have been game-changers for organization, planning, and creation without a heavy price tag. They’re free or low-cost and powerful enough to help build a solid foundation in the early stages. Build a Core Team Instead of Just Outsourcing While outsourcing to freelancers and dev shops can work for specific, short-term needs, I found that having a committed core team—people who believe in the mission as much as I do—makes all the difference. Not only does it save on costs over time, but it also means that continuity, product knowledge, and a shared commitment to the long-term vision stay strong as we go from MVP to public launch. Instead of juggling multiple freelancers, this core team carries the mission forward with a focus on impact and growth. Lean on Affordable Market Research Market research doesn’t have to break the bank. Using platforms like Amazon MTurk, I was able to get valuable insights without spending thousands on surveys. It wasn’t perfect, but it gave us enough information to take the next step while keeping our budget intact. Starting lean doesn’t just keep costs down—it forces us to focus on what matters most and build only what adds value. And every small, strategic step builds momentum toward our bigger goals. If you’re bootstrapping or building lean, I’d love to hear what’s worked for you or if you have any tips on stretching resources. Let’s help each other grow!

Incorporating a new startup? Clerky can help you save $400 by taking advantage of a little-known feature of Delaware law ?? With Clerky, you can file your certificate of incorporation immediately, but not have it take effect until January 1, 2025. How? Delaware lets you specify an effective date. If you specify January 1, 2025, your corporation won't exist until then, even if you file the paperwork now. That means you won't need to pay the 2024 franchise tax, which is $400 for most new startups ?? This feature is available to all our customers at no extra charge, from now until the new year ?? Learn more about January 1 effective dates here ?

New startups can set up as a public benefit corporation from the start on Clerky! Early-stage startups don’t need to worry about hostile takeovers or activist investors, but PBCs are nevertheless a great option if you have a mission that goes beyond shareholder value. We introduced the first-ever way for startups to incorporate as PBCs in 2017, in partnership with B Lab, the non-profit that invented PBCs. Today, 25% of all Delaware PBCs incorporate on Clerky ??
