  • Progress on South Carolina’s first college of veterinary medicine continues! Construction of the CVM campus is moving along quickly in anticipation of welcoming our first class of students in the Fall of 2026, pending accreditation from the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education. We’ve engaged with a variety of stakeholders who are interested in following our growth. Below are some frequently asked questions we’ve received recently! Questions from Future Veterinarians What kind of degree will Clemson College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) students earn? The Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) is a professional degree program, similar to a law or human medical degree. Our students will typically enter our program after graduating with a four-year undergraduate degree and/or completing specific undergraduate prerequisite credits. The Clemson DVM is a four-year program. Years one-three will involve preclinical training, and students will spend their fourth year completing a variety of clerkship rotations within the Clemson CVM clinical training network (partner veterinarians around the state) as well as working with the Clemson large animal ambulatory service. This partial distributive clinical training model will be similar to an apprenticeship where students work closely with veterinarians as educators and role models. During this time, students will also be able to explore specific areas of interest such as radiology, pathology, large animal or zoo medicine. What will the first three years of the degree entail? The curriculum will focus on healthy animals (year one), diseased animals (year two) and case-based clinical studies (year three). Woven in this learning will be a focus on professional development skills such as communication, well-being, financial literacy, ethics and clinical skills including performing anesthesia and surgery. • As we wrap up an incredibly difficult week for Upstate South Carolina and the region, we would like to thank the brave first responders, linemen, utility workers and volunteers who are working tirelessly to help communities recover and citizens piece their lives back together. This is Penny, the Clemson Fire Department’s former therapy dog. Penny, who is a year and a half, was raised by Lt. Jim Thackston and Lt. Jennifer Thackston. Penny’s primary responsibility was to support fire department personnel with stress reduction and enhance their overall well-being. Her favorite treats: Wag More Bark Less Meat Cravers Biscuits and Pup-Peroni. Surprisingly, she is not a fan of peanut butter. Thank you again to everyone who is working to help our community recover. If you would like to help or if you need assistance, we have helpful links in the CVM Linktree and posted in the comments below. #GoTigers #FashionFriday #ClemsonVetMed #ClemsonCVMCares

  • Thanks to the local 4-H for allowing our Associate Dean of Academic Affairs to provide a College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) update at a recent equine educational contest training. Nicki Wise provided an overview on the growth of the college and proposed curriculum to a group of volunteers and parents. “They loved the presentation,” said Leona Ransdell, 4-H Youth Development, Equine Program Coordinator. “It made them really excited to see what lies in the future for Clemson and that the model that Clemson is adopting is so beneficial for 4-H members. Additionally, they are able to see how 4-H sets their youth up to pursue vet school!” Dr. Wise is an equine veterinarian and horse enthusiast which made the presentation even more special. “The goal of the presentation was to connect with local horse industry leaders and inform them about the plans for the CVM,” said Wise. “We hope that they share the exciting information about our program with their local communities. Their questions and comments really validated that the mission and goals of the CVM align with the support they need as Upstate horse owners; by not only providing veterinary care when needed but by also encouraging students to consider careers in equine practice.” The South Carolina 4-H Livestock Project, part of the Agriculture & Animals Program Area is an independent-study or club project that engages youth interested in learning about: Beef Cattle, Dairy Cattle, Horse, Swine, Sheep, Goat, Poultry and Rabbit. #GoTigers #ClemsonVetMed #clemsonvetmed Nicki Wise DVM

  • September is #ServiceDogAwarenessMonth. We’re shining a light today on Clemson Puppies with a Purpose. This is a student organization that exists to support the Guide Dog Foundation (GDF) through volunteer puppy raising, assistance animal advocacy and education. Student volunteers become pet parents to these sweet dogs to help get them ready for their intense training! “Puppies will typically go to their puppy raisers around 8-12 weeks of age, and they will stay with their raisers for approximately 14-16 months before advancing to formal training,” said acting club president and club co-founder Ashlyn Wells (‘25). Ashlyn is raising Luke, who is the golden retriever pictured below!?The two other dogs in the pictures are Amber (left), who Mia Bleichrodt is raising, and Presto (right), who Hali Jones is raising. “Raising a service dog in training means being a part of something much bigger than myself,” said Wells. “Seeing each dog go on to fulfill their purpose is so incredibly rewarding, and I have loved being a part of the journey to provide someone with a life-changing service dog.” According to Wells, The Guide Dog Foundation is a nationwide group, but they work with several colleges and universities across the country to raise future assistance dogs. If you’d like to learn more about helping out this important cause, you can find them on Instagram: @Clemson.PuppieswithaPurpose. Go Tigers! #FashionFridayonMonday #GoTigers #ClemsonVetMed #Clemson
