Thanks to Access Carolina for allowing our Dean, Dr. Steven Marks, a chance to discuss pet safety tips for #Thanksgiving. The Greenville Humane Society was kind enough to bring an adoptable pet for the segment. Sweet Duncan is looking for his forever home. Clemson University officials and state leaders broke ground Friday, November 22, 2024, on the Harvey S. Peeler Jr. College of Veterinary Medicine, marking a historic moment for Clemson University and the state of South Carolina as the only college of veterinary medicine in the state continues to take shape. Earlier on Friday, Clemson’s Board of Trustees approved the name of the new college, which honors Harvey S. Peeler Jr., a 1970 graduate of the University who has served as a senator in the South Carolina General Assembly since 1980. “Senator Peeler has passionately supported the development of a college of veterinary medicine for more than 20 years, and his efforts throughout the process have been instrumental in developing this new college at Clemson,” Clemson Board Chair Kim Wilkerson said. “In recognition of his contributions to this historic development for Clemson and the entire state, our board is excited to name this new college in his honor.” Peeler, the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee and a cattle farmer in his hometown of Gaffney, has experienced firsthand the need for large and small animal veterinarians in the state. #FashionFriday: We’re spotlighting the Clemson University Equine Center. The Clemson Equestrian Team calls the Equine Center home where they participate in weekly riding lessons in preparation for competing against other universities throughout the school year. The Clemson Equestrian Team is a part of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) and is comprised of both Hunt Seat and Western riders. The Equine Center also hosts students for various Animal Science classes. For example, the Equine Behavior & Training course allows students to work hands-on with the young horses and learn to better understand all aspects of horse training. The Equine Center is across the street from what will be the CVM Complex. Visitors have gotten a front row seat as construction has progressed! #GoTigers #clemsonvetmed #Clemson

Our team had a wonderful time at the South Carolina Association of Veterinarians (SCAV) Palmetto Conference in Greenville last week. We met with veterinarians and other professionals in the veterinary medicine world from around the region. Some of the #Clemson Pre-Vet students also stopped by to say hi! Dean Steven Marks and Dr. Brian Butler, Associate Dean of Clinical Partners, both presented to engaged crowds. Dean Marks provided an update on creation of the college, and Dr. Butler provided more information about becoming a partner for our fourth-year students' clinical rotations. It was energizing to experience everyone’s curiosity and enthusiasm about the college. We think the prize wheel was a hit with the crowd as well! Thanks to SCAV for inviting us to participate. We look forward to a strong partnership and collaboration for years to come! #GoTigers #ClemsonVetMed #PalmettoConference #SCAV #SCAVT #DVM #VDM #LVT #CVT #RVT #greenvillesc

Happy #FashionFriday! This week, meet Katie! ?? Katie has been a proud member of Clemson University - College of Agriculture, Forestry & Life Sciences Dean Holt's family for the past 12 years! She is a yellow lab rescue and turned 13 this summer. Her nickname is "Fetch," due to her love for the game in her younger years. Until a few years ago, she would constantly pester her family to go outside and throw her a ball. Katie likes to go on walks with her border collie pals, Tripper and Tucker. Katie is a full-fledged member of the family and loves to sit up on the furniture with everyone! Another fun fact about Katie is that she is allergic to red meat. It took Dean Holt and his wife Susan a long time to discover this and figure out how to treat it. Now, every week Susan cooks Katie's meals of brown rice, veggies, oats and canned salmon or mackerel. Dean Holt says that Katie is likely the healthiest eater in their home. ??

Thanks to Nicki Wise DVM for her hard work in telling the story of the CVM! #GoTigers #ClemsonVetMed
It’s been amazing traveling the state to meet with academic colleagues and area veterinarians to share our plans for South Carolina’s first College of Veterinary Medicine. I recently attended an event at Francis Marion University where I was graciously hosted by faculty member Dr. Tamatha Barbeau, the university’s President and First Lady, local veterinarians, and students. I shared updates about hiring, construction, and the development of our curriculum and relationships with local practitioners. Our accreditation process is ongoing, and we intend accept our first class of students in the Fall of 2026. Follow us on LinkedIn for updates! Clemson University College of Veterinary Medicine
